The Henry County High School Lady Patriots softball team whipped McKenzie, 9-3, on Thursday and then went 1-1 in two games on Saturday in Waverly. Henry County suffered a 4-3 loss to Houston County and a 9-4 win over Davidson Academy.

The Diamond Classic was supposed to be played in Camden Saturday, with HCHS playing there.

But after storms damaged the field in Camden and forced cancellation of that classic, the Lady Patriots shifted gears and played two games at Waverly instead.

“We misplayed five balls in the first game (vs. Houston County) that led to their runs and had eight strikeouts,” HCHS coach Renae Lassiter said. “I didn’t think we were very focused. We have to be mentally prepared every game. We bounced back in the second game against a pretty good Davidson (Academy)team.

“The defense was sold and Lilly (Steele) pitched a great game, she kept them off balance. Celia (Lamkin) came in and shut the door at the end. It was a good win.”

HCHS (7-2) is scheduled to travel to Clarksville Northwest on Tuesday. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m.

LADY PATRIOTS 9, LADY REBELS 3

The Lady Patriots took a 1-0 lead in their half of the first on a sacrifice fly by Emma Thompson that scored Noe Wilkerson, who had led off the inning with a single.

HCHS went ahead 2-0 in the third. Lamkin singled and later scored on a double by Thompson. Serenity Crosser then doubled home Breely Peirpoint and Thompson to make it 4-0. Peirpoint had reached on a single earlier in the inning.

The lead grew to 5-0 when the next batter, Layne Latimer, singled home Crosser.

Alley French and Audrey Hill started off the fourth with singles and one out later a hit by Lamkin loaded the bases. After the second out of the inning, Thompson’s base hit drove home French and Hill to put the Lady Patriots ahead 7-0. McKenzie scored twice in the fourth to make it 7-2.

HCHS struck again in the sixth. Hill and Wilkerson were both hit by pitches and one out later Peirpoint doubled home Hill and Wilkerson to give the Lady Patriots a 9-2 advantage.

McKenzie pushed across a run in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as HCHS earned the 9-3 win.

The Lady Patriots’ offense produced 13 hits by eight batters.

Lamkin went 3-for-4. Peirpoint went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Thompson went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Wilkerson went 2-for-3. Crosser drove home two runs while Latimer and French each had one RBI.

Houston County took a 1-0 lead with an HCHS error in the first inning, but the Lady Patriots tied the game in the second inning on an RBI groundout by Jocelyn Lee that brought home Andie Barrett.

Houston County went up 4-1 in the third aided by three HCHS errors.

The Lady Patriots tried to rally in the fourth when Lee doubled home Maddie Moroni and Latimer to make it 4-3.

The next two batters struck out, however, to end the inning and end the threat.

HCHS went down in order in the fifth. The game was called because of the time limit.

The Lady Patriots outhit Houston County, 5-3, but four errors hurt their cause. Latimer went 2-for-2 while Lee drove in three runs.

Lamkin took the loss despite not giving up an earned run. She gave up four runs, all unearned, on three hits in five innings. She walked two and struck out six.

Davidson Academy put up its first run in the fourth, but HCHS still led 6-1.

The Lady Patriots added their final three runs in the fourth. A single by Wilkerson scored a run to make it 7-1 and back-to-back singles by Latimer and Barrett scored two more runs and HCHS led 9-1.

The Lady Bears scratched out three runs in the fourth to make it 9-4, but that was as close as it got. Lamkin struck out the side in the fifth.
