GREENSBORO, N.C. (WCYB) — In the midst of a tough season for ETSU softball, the Bucs still fought to the bitter end - needing 10 innings to settle their short trip in the SoCon Tournament.
On Wednesday morning, the Bucs faced off with No. 5 Wofford for a shot to play later in the day. But in the end, it was a Wofford walk-off winner that sent the Bucs home early.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Wofford got on the board first when two runners reached and the Hope Ingle then crushed a three-run homer to left center field, putting the Terriers up 3-0.
The Bucs would answer in the fifth inning when two runners were on as Cameron Young doubled to left field to bring a run across home plate. Then Riley Nayadley doubled on the next pitch to score Rieger and Young, making the contest 3-3.
Then it became a pitcher's duel as each time collected just one hit over the course of the next five innings entering the 10th inning.
Following a sacrifice fly RBI by Jasmine Sanchez to score Faith Adams in the top half to give ETSU their first lead, it was Wofford responding in a big way in the bottom half. An RBI single by Gracie Parker scored a run to tie the game at 4-4. Then Ingle hit into a fielder’s choice in the next at-bat, which allowed a run to score ending the game at 5-4.
Wofford advances to play No. 4 seed Mercer later Wednesday at 4 p.m., while the Bucs season comes to a close.
