SMYRNA — One-point defeats are tough to take. Losing by one at the state tournament creates additional anguish.
Dobyns-Bennett, competing in the TSSAA Division I bowling quarterfinals on Thursday, fell 14-13 to host Smyrna.
D-B, which knocked down 2,501 total pins to 2,500 for its opponent, picked up seven points (1,184 pins) to Smyrna’s one (952) in the first American 10-pin game. The Bulldogs countered with a 5-3 decision (1,134-1,010) in Game 2.
Landon Dunlap, Seth Mullins and Blake McReynolds earned two points apiece for the Indians, who got one each from Kyler Coger and Peyton Keesee.
What put Smyrna (17-2) over the top were victories in both Baker games, equating to an 8-0 points advantage. The Bulldogs prevailed 213-148 and 201-159.
Coach Debbie Knott’s Indians, who advanced to the state finals one year ago, finished 11-2.
Also playing on Thursday was Chuckey-Doak, which suffered a 23-4 loss to Hardin County (17-0). Kaelan Pitts, Blake Cox, Evan Stills and Peyton Murphy each tallied an American 10-pin point for the Knights (6-5).

Southwestern, a school out of Roanoke, got 13 points from Sophia Vaughn. Taylor Lam had 10, Colby Cummings nine and Kate Fernandez eight.
CLINTWOOD — Terran Owens and Ryan O’Quinn accounted for five points apiece in a 10-3 overtime favoring the Wolfpack.
Owens racked up 24 points for the night with O’Quinn recording 20. Ridgeview’s Clayton Compton provided 13 points and Isaiah Justice 11.
Grundy was paced by Caleb Conaway, who amassed 24 points. Jonah Looney (16), Ethan McClanahan (13) and Landon Johnson (10) also logged double-digit points for the Golden Wave.
There was plenty of traffic on the charity stripe. The Wolfpack took 36 foul shots, sinking 22, and Grundy hit 20 of its 28 free throws.
