Former MBA, MLB pitcher Andrew Triggs to take over Big Red baseball in July

Montgomery Bell Academy has hired Andrew Triggs to take over the baseball program on July 1 when current coach Mike Anderson will focus on his position as the school's athletics director.

A 2007 MBA graduate, Triggs will also serve as the director of alumni relations in MBA's office of Alumni and Development.

Anderson will resign as coach at the end of this season after serving in that role since 2013. The Big Red are 10-10 this season and haven't made the state tournament since 2013 when MBA finished Division II-AA state runner-up. The program has four state titles, the last coming in 2004.

“While we will miss coach Anderson’s mentorship on the baseball field, we are fortunate to have him leading our overall athletics programs,” MBA head of school Dr. William Daughtrey said. “He has a deep commitment to fostering a robust athletics program that develops in our students those enduring habits, attitudes, skills, and values that will serve them well beyond their time as MBA students.”

Triggs was a two-time All Pac-12 pitcher at Southern California as well as a four-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection and the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2012. He was selected in the 19th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals and played for eight years in professional baseball in both the minors and majors, including the Oakland A's, San Francisco Giants, and Boston Red Sox.

“In addition to the knowledge of the game he brings as a former Major League, Andrew has impressed us all with his appreciation for coaching our students and his clear focus on encouraging each player to lead with hard work, tenacity, generosity, and humility,” Daughtrey said.
