Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Volleyball Classic
Scott Herpst
If this year's Prebul/Kia Tennessee-Georgia All-Star Volleyball Classic is anything like last year's inaugural game, fans are in for a treat.
This year's clash will take place at Girls' Preparatory School in Chattanooga Monday night at 7 in a best-of-five match.
One year ago, Georgia, a heavy underdog, pushed favored Tennessee to the limit before finally falling 23-25, 25-10, 25-18, 20-25, 15-13.
Baylor's Kirby Waddell was named the Tennessee Player of the Game, while the Georgia Player of the Game award went to Brittany Modrall of Ringgold.
Alex Scruggs of Boyd-Buchanan set an All-Star record with 10 kills and was named the game's Most Valuable Player.
"They gave us a good show," Scruggs said afterward. "We didn't know Georgia volleyball was that good."
The coaches from that match will lead their teams back on the court this time around as well.
GPS coach Paul Brock will guide a strong Tennessee roster. "That night (last year) was really just about promoting volleyball," he said. "But I think a rivalry was created too."
Brock's roster will include University of Georgia signee and Division II all state tournament selection Anjelic Partridge of Notre Dame, Christina Haskew of East Ridge and Amanda Trent of Ooltewah.
The team will include players from five different Chattanooga area schools that went to the state tournament this past fall. East Ridge and Notre Dame advanced to the Final Four in their respective classifications.
Georgia head coach John Gaston of Ringgold will counter with an experienced team of his own.
Among the players scheduled to suit up include Area 6-A/AA Player of the Year Allison Watts of Gordon Lee, North Georgia Player of the Year and All-State selection Kristy Walker of Ringgold and Area 7-AAAA Player of the Year Taylor Minor of Northwest Whitfield, one of four Lady Bruins to be named All-Area this past fall.
Those three schools advanced to the state tournament with Ringgold finishing in the Final Four for the second consecutive year.
The All-Star series will conclude on Thursday with the Softball Classic doubleheader at Frost Stadium starting at 7 p.m.
