Dobyns-Bennett has recorded its fair share of walk-off wins this season, but a bizarre defensive play ended the Tribe’s 8-7 victory over Cherokee Saturday afternoon at J. Fred Johnson Stadium.

Two weeks after Tegan Begley walked off a 5-4 win over the Chiefs with a pinch-hit single, the sophomore scooped Manning Brook’s two-out line-single to right field and froze Cherokee baserunner Bryce Elliott, representing the tying run, between third and home with a seed to Tribe cutoff man Cam Hayworth.

Hayworth’s relay back to Mason Barrett nabbed Elliott before he could scramble back to third for the final out of the game.

“Tegan has played a lot of third base for us and has made a lot of great plays with his athleticism and instincts,” said Dobyns-Bennett coach Ryan Wagner. “But that was probably the best play he’s made all year.”

Begley put the Tribe on top two batters into the bottom of the first with his third home run of the season.

Cherokee loaded the bases with two singles and a walk with all three scoring on two different D-B errors.

“We didn’t have a lot of energy today after Senior Night last night to be honest with you,” noted Wagner. “I just told them that you have to serve a purpose out here, whether you get on the field or not.”

The Indians re-took the lead for good with a five-run third. A Mason Barnett single drove in Will Ritz, Barnett came around to score on an error, Kasey Carter walked with the bases loaded to force in Mason Kerkhoff and an Andrew Reilly double scored courtesy runner Jaylen Thomas and Maddux Martin.

The Chiefs crawled back to within one run with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by a Parker Travis two-run double.

Taylor Blankenship’s RBI-single bottom half gave Dobyns-Bennett a two-cushion it took to the seventh.

Lead-off hitter Clay Wagner walked to leadoff the top half of the seventh. After Wagner advanced to second on a groundout, Wagner scored on Cole Putnal’s two-bagger that hugged the right field line.

After Tribe reliever Ean Mays enticed a second out on ground out, Brooks sent his liner to right field.

Kerkhoff led the Indians at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored Blankenship, Reilly and Barnett all finished with two hits with Reilly and Barnett driving in two runs apiece.

Connor Godsey took over for Hayworth in the third and went two innings for his first varsity win. Ean Mays retired the Chiefs in order in the sixth and thanks to Begley, got out of trouble in the seventh, for his first save.
