Josh Marmo’s one-out walk-off single gave Science Hill a 5-4 win over defending Class 3A state champion Greeneville Saturday afternoon at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.

The victory closes the ‘Topper regular season at 27-10. Science Hill will host the District 1-AAAA Tournament starting Wednesday.

“The last regular season game of my high school career, what a great way to end it,” said Berry. “We’re ready to make a run in the postseason.”

The game-winning Marmo single came on a 1-2 pitch.

“I was looking for something hanging in the zone,” continued Marmo. “He threw me an inside curveball and I just got it and hooked it down the line.”

The bottom of the seventh started with Jackson Berry wearing a pitch with one out. Major Osbolt’s grounder was then misplayed allowing Berry to advance to third and trot home on the Marmo base knock.

“I was trying to figure out how to break up a possible double play and then in the corner of my eye, I see the ball go through his legs,” Marmo explained. “I was like I'm going to get to third here.”

Marmo had two hits on the day, while Landon Smelser, Major Osbolt and Aiden Vermillion all drove in runs for the ‘Toppers.

Noah Hazell, Caden Wells and Hagen Gibson all saw time on the mound for Science Hill with Gibson collecting the win with 1⅓ innings of one-hit baseball. Hazell got the start, going three innings and allowing one earned run and striking out four.

Cade Wells worked 2⅔ innings, fanning two and allowing two hits. Gibson came on to get the save.

“I thought all three of our pitchers were outstanding,” said Science Hill coach Ryan Edwards. “All three did a really good job against a good line-up.”

Kaine Ricker singled, doubled and drove in two runs for Greeneville (17-12).
