Chase Wolfenbarger and Keeley Canter led the way as the Tennessee High Vikings earned a runner-up finish in the girls team standings during Saturday’s TSSAA Class AA East Section Track & Field Championships at the University of Tennessee.
Wolfenbarger won the triple jump (37-04), had a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (15.48 seconds) and placed fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (47.30 seconds) for the Vikings.
Canter was third in both the shot put and the discus, with a top throw of 33-07 in the former and 114-03 in the latter.
THS finished with 64 points, well behind champion Signal Mountain’s total of 170 ½.
The 4x400 relay team got bronze in 4:12.37.
The Vikings also received fourth-place showings from Keaton Romans in the long jump (17-02 ¼) and Jenna Reecher in the 800-meter run (2:23.76)

A fifth-place finish for the Vikings came from Janell Tabor in the shot put with a top mark of 32-10.
Tennessee High’s boys were 19th in the team standings. The Vikings’ 4x800 relay team was sixth (8:41.78) and they had a trio of seventh-place finishers: Thomas Slater (triple jump, 41-10), Ryder Poole (3,200-meter run, 10:05.45) and 4x400 relay (3:33.15).
Sullivan East was 23rd in the boys and 26th in the girls team standings. The ninth-place girls 4x200 relay team (1:54.02) and the 10th-place finish by the boys 4x400 relay squad (3:47.74) were the best for the Patriots.
In the Class AAA meet at Hardin Valley, Hunter Hawkins had himself a day for West Ridge.
He was runner-up in the 200-meter dash (21.82 seconds) and third in the boys long jump (21-08 ½).
Stanley stars for Abingdon
Tyler Stanley sprinted and soared for the Abingdon Falcons on Saturday during the Christiansburg Track & Field Invitational.
He was victorious in both the boys 100-meter dash (11.04 seconds) and 200-meter dash (22.66 seconds) and his leap of 20-09 ¾ earned him runner-up status in the long jump.
Abingdon finished third in the boys team standings with a score of 72 ½. Blacksburg won with a total of 143 ½, while Heritage-Lynchburg was runner-up with a score of 75 ½.
Rives Boltwood (1,600, 4:14.43) and Owen Barr (triple jump, 41-05 ¼) had runner-up finishes.
On the girls side, Abingdon had two champions.
Josie Jackson crossed the finish line first in the 800-meter run in 2:17.39, while Ella Seymore was victorious in the shot put with a top throw of 36-01 ¾.
Runner-up finishes went to Ellie Ruble in the discus (107-04 ½) and Annsley “A.J.” Trivette in the shot put with her best heave being 34-06 ¼.
Abingdon was fourth in the girls team standings.
BASEBALL
Abingdon 5, Wise County Central 3
Braylen DeBusk was Da Man as Da Closer for the Abingdon High School Falcons on Saturday.
DeBusk pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to put the finishing touches on a 5-3 Mountain 7 District baseball victory at Wise County Central.
DeBusk entered the game and took over for starter Beckett Dotson with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning after Central’s Cayden Hayes and Nate West had scored on an error to bring the Warriors within two runs.
He proceeded to shut the door. He allowed one hit and struck out three. Twenty-two of the 33 pitches he threw went for strikes.
“Braylen was big for us in relief,” said AHS coach Mark Francisco. “He had all three pitches working and did a great job of attacking the zone.”
Dotson allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in his 3 2/3 innings of work, while striking out seven and walking two.
Jett Humphreys hit a two-run homer in the first inning for AHS, while Aidan Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Hayes went 3-for-3 and scored two runs for Central. Bryson Wilson had an RBI.
Central (10-10, 5-7) travels to Union (12-7, 6-6) on Monday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Mountain 7 District tournament.

SOFTBALL
Twin Springs 8, J.I. Burton 7
Twin Springs scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning – the final two on an error with one out – as the Titans put together an improbable rally to top the J.I. Burton Raiders.
The Titans trailed 7-2 before the uprising.
Sophie Scalf went 3-for-4 and scored the winning run, while Makenzie Gillenwater (3-for-4, two runs), Albrey Nash (two RBIs) and Aubrey Meade (2-for-4, two runs, two RBIs) had productive days at the plate as well for Twin Springs.
Savanah Adams and Shay Henderson each had three hits and two RBIs for Burton.
