Science Hill Boys Claim First Section Track Title in 22 Years; Lady Indians Runner-Up
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — After many years of being dominated by the Marble City schools, the power in track and field has returned to the Tri-Cities.

Science Hill’s boys team sent a statement to the rest of the state on Saturday at Hardin Valley Academy by winning the Section 1-AAA title in rather dominating fashion with 123 points to claim its first title since 2002 and just the third in program history — the first coming in 1935.

The top four finishers in each event automatically advanced to the state meet on May 23 in Murfreesboro. Two meet records were broken and one was tied.
Maryville won the girls team title with 100½ points while Dobyns-Bennett’s girls finished second with 86. The Indians were third on the boys with 92. Science Hill’s girls tied for fourth (67).

“This is big for these kids and they bought into the team concept,” Science Hill coach Wes Jones said, who helped Hardin Valley dominate the sectional a little over a decade ago as a coach.

“We had some kids doing four or five events in Will (Hagemeier)’s case because of the decathlon a few weeks ago. Everyone is just bought into the mindset of doing whatever it takes.”

Though it was a total team effort, the highlight of the day came early on as senior Rylan Jordan had a fabulous start and blistered the 100-meter dash with a Northeast Tennessee all-time record of 10.45 seconds that tied the meet record of Christian Langlois (Bearden) from 2021.

“That came out of nowhere and I was trying to run my own race,” Jordan said. “It feels great knowing all the work I’ve put in and the work that my teammates have put in to push me every day.”

The day got started off in the right way for the Johnson City crew as senior Emmett Watson won the long jump (22-4½) and fellow senior William Hagemeier got back in his groove and repeated as the pole vault champion (15-0).

Unfortunately, top-seeded Carter Brademeyer of Science Hill did not qualify for the state as he finished fifth (14-6).

On the track, the ’Toppers ran a school record in the 4x800 relay of 7:53.64 and finished third. The 4x200 relay team won in 1:26.94 and the 4x100 blistered the event with a win in 42.51.

Running the 400 for the first time in a few weeks, Watson turned the one-lapper in 48.23 to win with ease as Daniel Boone’s Evan Tomlinson was second (49.47).

Science Hill finished off the meet in fashion, winning the 4x400 relay in 3:20.20.

“We’re going to have four relays in there and a couple of kids in the open events and a few others sneaking in,” Jones said. “A lot of good things are happening for us on the boys’ side, but we’re going down there and going up against a tough Brentwood team that’s been dominant all year long. … It’s going to be important over the next two weeks or so to continue to work and try to get faster.”

OTHER LOCAL CHAMPS

Dobyns-Bennett senior and Tennessee commit Luke Mussard made a little bit of history, winning his third 1,600 title in 4:18.78. He joined only Knoxville High’s Clarence Joslin in the 91-year history of the meet to win three 1,600/mile titles.

Joslin won three straight from 1936-38. Mussard won his first at Daniel Boone in 2021 and the last two at D-B.

“I had a similar tactical plan to last year, letting other guys lead it and go with about 600 to go,” Mussard said. “It’s pretty cool to be in a group that’s me and a guy from almost 90 years ago.”

Mussard came back later to win the 800 in 1:54.08, blowing by the field in the final 500 meters.

“The turnaround was quick, but I felt pretty strong and everything is going in the right direction,” Mussard said. “We have more in the tank on the 4x800 for sure because I split 1:57 and cruised in the last 200. There’s time out there for us to go out there and really run fast.”

In the first wave of field events, D-B senior Samantha Degrace won her third high jump title with a clearance of 5-4. She joins Kristin Chapman (Campbell County), Mary Hirst (Bearden) and Katie Pickett (Maryville) to win the event at least three times in the 49-year history of the meet.

“I feel like winning three times is good, but I know I could’ve done better,” Degrace said. “I have one more meet to prove myself and I can’t be discouraged about anything. … If I could win state in the high jump, I’d be doing backflips.”

Degrace had two good attempts at 5-8 — which would’ve been her personal-best and tied the Northeast Tennessee all-time best — but she missed on all three.

Teammate Jaylah Hoeungpaseuth will join Degrace at state, nabbing third (5-0).

“I’ve just now started throwing my head back and they say when you’re getting higher and higher to look into the trees,” Degrace said. “If I can hold my arch up for a good amount of time, I feel like I’lll be there.”

Degrace later came back to win her fourth consecutive 100-meter hurdles title in 14.86. She joined Knox West’s Jackie Coward as the meet’s only four-time winners in the event. Degrace helped the 4x100 relay qualify, too, and finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.06).

Teammate Brayden Simpson had a solid outing as well, winning both the 110 (14.19) and 300 hurdles (38.64).

Saturday marked Simpson’s third 110 hurdles title, joining only Science Hill’s Vincent Darden (1938, 1939 and 1941) and the great Charlie Fleming (1933-35) to win the sectional high hurdles title three times.

“In the 110s, I’m satisfied with it, but I felt like I could’ve gone faster if I didn’t clip one of the hurdles,” Simpson said. “My tail leg absolutely destroyed one of them. I feel like if I can get my trail leg faster, I feel like I can break that 14 (seconds) barrier.”

D-B’s Nevan Smelser won the triple jump for the second-straight year with a best mark of 35-7 and qualified in the 100 hurdles (fourth, 16.07). Teammate Kamarion Marshall was a surprise winner in the high jump, clearing 6-4 while Nigel Vidale was third (6-2).

On the track, the Daniel Boone girls 4x800 relay team of Ella Battel, Sadie Honeycutt, Mahri Layne and Ava Nutter won in 9:24.85, barely missing their own meet record from last year. Honeycutt came back later to win the 1,600 (5:01.68) and the 3,200 (11:11.45).

Boone’s Tomlinson was runner-up to Jordan in the 100 with a great time of 10.47 and later won the 200 (21.55).

Science Hill senior Jersey Jones won the 400 in resounding fashion, running 57.35 while D-B’s Gigi Venzon was second (58.55).

The Science Hill girls capped off a successful meet by winning the 4x400 relay (3:59.07).

OTHER QUALIFIERS

Science Hill’s Kaia Thompson nabbed the fourth spot in the girls pole vault via a jump-off with a clearance of 9-6. Science Hill’s Emma Rhea was third in the long jump (16-5½).

Trevor Whitson finished second in the long jump as well for Science Hill (21-9½) while D-B’s Marshall was fourth (21-6).

The D-B girls 4x800 relay team was third, finishing in 9:40.66. The boys were second in a blistering 7:52.15 that would’ve won any other year.

Science Hill’s girls 4x200 relay ran 1:43.50 to finish second. The Lady Hilltoppers finished fourth in the 4x100 (50.09). D-B was third (49.94).

The D-B boys 4x100 is going to state, too, finishing fourth in 43.41. West Ridge was third in 43.31, beating the Indians for the first time this season.

Science Hill freshman Lorraine Hunter ran one of the smartest races all day, finishing third in the 800 (2:17.04). She bounced back nicely from a subpar 1,600 in which she finished outside the top five.

West Ridge’s Hunter Hawkins had a personal-best in the 200 by over a half-second and was runner-up in 21.82. Science Hill’s Whitson finished fourth (22.32).

Daniel Boone’s boys 4x400 relay was the final qualifier, finishing fourth (3:26.97).

MEET RECORDS

Farragut junior throwing sensation Bryce Thompson — the defending state champion and top-ranked in the state this season — broke Evan McCracken’s (Cherokee) meet record with a massive heave of 65-10½ in the shot put. McCracken’s mark had stood since 2015.

He threw the steel ball so far that it went out of the ring, becoming the first thrower to do so in competition.

The Hardin Valley boys 4x800 shattered the meet record with a sizzling 7:48.23, which also was a top-10 best time in state history. It was the fourth consecutive year that the meet record had been broken in the event.
