The Grundy County baseball team went 1-4 in the Viking Classic last week between games in Woodbury and Coalmont. The Yellow Jackets topped Ardmore, Alabama’s Rocket City in the first game before falling in consecutive games to Cameron High School and Cannon County.
The Jackets (4-10) began the tournament last Friday with an 8-1 win over Rocket City to snap a four-game losing streak. Grundy took a 1-0 lead in the third on an Issac Campbell RBI single before senior first baseman Will Foster blasted a two-run home run to center.Â
GCHS added five more runs in the fourth to end the contest in five innings. Gavin Knight and Campbell each tallied two hits, and the duo plus Foster all drove in two runs each.Â
Campbell picked up the win on the mound with a 3.2 inning outing. He yielded just one hit, one run and four walks while striking out five.Â
The following three games didn’t go Grundy’s way as Cameron High School from West Virginia blanked the Jackets 11-0 on Saturday, and Cannon County swept a Monday doubleheader 4-3 and 11-10, respectively.
Cameron no-hit Grundy in a five-inning game at GCHS. The Dragons’ Kason Angel struck out 12 and walked just one in the complete game. Knight represented the Jackets’ lone baserunner.
The Yellow Jackets were originally scheduled to play Cannon County on Monday and Tuesday earlier this week, but impending weather forced a doubleheader in Woodbury on Monday and no games Tuesday.
The Jackets out-hit the Lions 11-3 in the first game and scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but the late rally was not enough to lift Grundy over Cannon’s four-run sixth.
Jaxon Woodlee was nearly untouchable through five innings, but a pair of errors in the sixth innings gave Cannon County its winning advantage. The Lions took advantage of a double, two walks and two fielding errors to go up 4-0.
Woodlee singled home a run, Colton Rogers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Ryder White picked up an RBI single in the top of the seventh, but Cannon County reliever Bennett Kauffman survived the offensive outburst to earn the save. All three of Kauffman’s out came courtesy of strikeouts.
Cannon County took the high-scoring second game 11-10. Grundy played home team in the contest but came up one run short in the sixth of tying the game.
Trailing 11-8, Peyton McGee made it a two-run game with a sacrifice fly to center to score Knight, and Campbell scored during the following at-bat on a Woodlee grounder. Despite scoring two runs on two outs, a groundout ended the inning and Grundy’s late scoring chances.
Six Yellow Jackets collected hits, led by Gauge Marcom who was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Foster paced the offense with four runs batted in on one hit.
Grundy returns to the diamond Friday when it begins hosting duties for the Mountain Valley Classic. Warren County comes to Coalmont Friday for a 5 p.m. game, and the Jackets host Cumberland County and Whitwell at noon and 4:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday to wrap up the tournament.
GCHS jumps back into district play Monday and Tuesday with games against Community High School. The Jackets visit Community on Monday and 5 p.m., and the Vikings return the game to Coalmont on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
