The Skyline varsity boys basketball team opened its season with a dominant victory.
The Class 1A Vikings rolled past 4A Madison County 67-32 for a season-opening win Friday night in Gurley.
Skyline (1-0) led 18-13 after one quarter and 34-21 at halftime before outscoring the Tigers 22-4 in the third quarter to carry a 56-25 advantage into the final quarter.
Jake Cloud hit six 3-pointers to lead three Vikings in double figures with 18 points.
Will Avans pitched in 17 points and Brody Berninger netted 14 for the Vikings, who also got nine points from Scott York, five from Kristian King and two each from Chandler Hurt and Landon Rousseau.
Sean Thompson, Bryson Trammell and Jonathan Jacobs scored five points each for Madison County (0-1).
GIRLS
Madison County 43, Skyline 28 — At Gurley, a new-look Skyline team dropped its season opener the 4A Tigers Friday night.
Skyline (0-1), which returned no starters and just four players in all from last season’s Class 1A Northeast Regional runner-up team, trailed 10-2, 28-10 and 37-18 at the quarter breaks.
Makayla Amador scored six points and Jade Yeager and Bella Vans added five each for the Vikings, who also got four from Carley Knight, three each from Trinity Skipper and Olivia Tyler and two from Emma Manning.
Mylee Hill scored 12 points and MK Spicer netted 10 for Madison County (1-0).
Perry to be remembered at Skyline-Section games — The Skyline and Section high school basketball teams will honor the memory of T.J. Perry prior to the start of their varsity games at Skyline High School Tuesday night.
Perry, a longtime player and coach in Jackson County and North Alabama, died in an automobile accident on Sept. 8.
Perry played at Skyline and later Section, helping the Lions win the 2002-03 state championship his senior year. He went on serve as an assistant coach at both schools, and was Skyline’s varsity boys head coach during the 2020-21 season. This past summer, Perry was named the Director of Player Development for the Samford University Men’s Basketball program.
NSM girls’ season opener rescheduled — The North Sand Mountain varsity girls basketball team’s scheduled season opener Thursday at Fyffe has been rescheduled.
The game will now be played Nov. 18 at Fyffe High School.
It was rescheduled after Fyffe High School moved its Class 3A first-round playoff game at home against Ohatchee to Thursday night.
