In contrast with former Hueytown High School star Jameis Winston’s joy at his first snow game as the quarterback of the Cleveland Browns this season, Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold isn’t enjoying his first winter in the northern United States.
But that didn’t keep him from playing his “best game of the season” last week, Detroit coach Dan Campbell said.
A native of Tallahassee, Florida, and an All-American for Alabama last season, Arnold has shared his reactions to snow via his TikTok and YouTube channels.
Arnold’s first video was titled: “I can’t even get gas. The pump froze.”
“I’m from Florida, bro,” Arnold said. “I am not supposed to be in this right here. I’m at the gas station trying to get gas, but what in the world? Take me back home, man. Detroit, I love y’all. I love playing for the Lions. But I need to go in the house.”
Arnold then shared his reaction to driving in the snow.
“We back with another video, man, in the cold,” Arnold said. “I’m trying to get adjusted to it. Can’t lie: I’m doing better, but, you know, I don’t even know what to say. You can’t see nothing when you drive. I almost just ran off the road, so I just pulled aside just to wait till it die down a little bit. But you can’t see nothing at all. But I’m going to keep y’all posted on that. On the bright side, the Lions’re still winning, though, man. That’s the best part about being in Detroit. Other than that, you can’t see nothing, and it’s cold.”
Arnold ended his next video when he nearly slipped down walking across the parking lot at the Lions’ facility.
A first-round rookie, Arnold still managed to play every Detroit defensive snap in a 34-31 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Dec. 5, prompting Campbell’s assessment of his play on Monday.
Campbell said it’s “getting to that time of the year” when first-year players hit the rookie wall.
“Honestly, what happens with a lot of rookies,” Campbell said, “especially guys you’re counting on, unfortunately some of them take a nosedive because this is where their season begins to dip down. It’s over. But then the other ones who hang in there, man, they really start taking flight, like (Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra) St. Brown did his rookie year. He started to take off. Once we hit November, December, he started to gain strength. …
“And I feel like that’s where Arnold’s at. He’s starting to push through this, and he’s gaining enough valuable reps, experience. He’s not letting the grind of the season weigh him down, and he’s getting better.”

When Arnold played against Green Bay, it was 68 degrees. That’s because the game was played indoors at Ford Field in Detroit. Outside, it was 29.
Arnold hasn’t had a snow game in his rookie season. But there’s still a chance before the regular season ends: The Lions visit the Chicago Bears for an NFC North game at Soldier Field on Dec. 22.
Before that, Detroit plays the Buffalo Bills at 3:25 p.m. CST Sunday at Ford Field. The Lions have a 12-1 record and are riding a franchise-record 11-game winning streak. Buffalo has a 10-3 mark. Both teams have clinched playoff berths with four games remaining on their regular-season schedule.
