LAVEEN — The Lady Knights are sitting in the middle of the pack after the first round of the state finals.
Lake Havasu High School senior Bailey O’Neill shot a 43-45 88 to tie sophomore teammate Sara Stowers, who finished with a 40-48 88 after the first round of the AIA Division I State Tournament, at the Aguila Golf Course. Havasu junior Kursten Barrett ended the day with a 48-48 96.
Hannah O’Sullivan of Phoenix Xavier leads the tournament after the first round, with a 4-under 68. Five players are at par or under.
Mohave County’s other golfer that qualified for the postseason — Kingman’s Bekah Van Kirk — is in 27th position after shooting a 38-44 82
It was another return trip to the state finals for O’Neill, who qualified all four years of her high school career.
“It’s the same course as last year but I haven’t played since the state tournament last year, so I had to go out and play with the course. And that can be tough, not knowing where the hazards are or the length of the hole. But you have to adjust, that’s what being a golfer is all about,” O’Neill said.
Stowers, playing the in the postseason for the first time, said it was her chipping that saved her round.
“I was chipping on to the green, close to the hole. That was working for me today,” Stowers said. “This is one of those courses that if you hit short, you’re kind of between a rock and hard place. And the girls I was with were hitting much longer than I was. I just wanted to stay in the fairway.”
Friday was Barrett’s second time at the state tournament. She was part of the Lady Knights squad that qualified as a team in 2010.
“I had focus issues,” Barrett said of her performance, Friday. “I let the other girls (in her foursome) get to me and I played their game instead of playing mine,
“I plan to go out tomorrow just relaxed and with a new attitude,” she continued. “Like today never happened.”
LHHS head coach Jerome Kosters said he’s telling his players to approach today’s second round the same way as every match through the season.
“We know the groups that we’re partnered with have players that can shoot even par. So I’m saying, ‘don’t focus on them. Play your won game,’” Kosters said.
“I’m happy. We have two players in the 80s and Kursten just had an off day. Those happen,” he continued. “And we have three players at state. Besides the schools that qualified as a team, no other team has three players here.”
The final round of 18 holes gets underway today, at 7:40 a.m. The Lady Knights will be paired with players from Mesa Dobson and Mesa Desert Ridge.
