No. 6 Rhodes looks strong in game one win over No. 9 Methodist, 7-4

Demorest, Georgia – The No. 6 Rhodes College baseball opened up Regional play on Wednesday at Loudermilk Field against N0. 9 Methodist University, bypassing the Monarchs 7-4.

With the win, the Lynx are now sporting a 33-11 record. The Monarchs now post a record of 32-8 on the year.

Daniel Morris started on the bump and worked out of a first inning jam, retiring the final batter he faced by strikeout. In the bottom of the inning, David Balauger stroked a double over the left fielder's head to score Bill Munson. The Lynx were not able to manufacture any offense in the second, but posted two runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when Ryan Olive' ripped a single through the middle to score Josh Keen and Munson and post a 3-0 lead.

Morris worked his way to a one-two-three inning in the bottom half of the second. He then worked his way out of a tough third and fourth inning, unscathed. After surrendering one run in the top half of the fifth, he worked out of a tough jam. The Lynx Cats began to roll again in their half of the fifth. After Munson ripped a mammoth triple to centerfield, he ran in after Justin Genter laced a line drive double down the left field line for a 4-1 advantage.

Methodist was able to produce a pair of runs in their sixth, as Jack Mercer entered the game in relief for Morris. However, the Lynx matched the Monarchs in the bottom half, scrapping together two runs off an error and a Munson bases-loaded walk. After grinding through a difficult seventh, the Lynx took their turn but were unable to produce, heading into the eighth frame with a 6-3 lead.

However the Lynx bats were able to push one more run across in the eighth, as Moreland crossed the plate when Munson blasted a double down the field line. The ninth inning saw Josh Olejnik pick up the first two outs, while Blake Glauben got a fly out for the final one-third, as the Lynx rolled their way to a big 7-4 win.

Morris earned the win on the hill, working through five and one-thirds inning. He allowed three earned runs and struck out three. Mercer worked the next two and two-thirds, allowing zero runs on two hits and two K's.

Munson had a day for the Lynx, going 4-4 with two doubles and a triple. The shortstop also scored three times and drove in two as well. Genter represented a key factor as well, going 2-4 with an RBI, as well as making plays on the right side all afternoon. Olive' also contributed to the team's offensive surge, going 2-5 with two RBIs.

The Lynx will be back in action tomorrow, May 14 to face the loser of game three, the 3-4 matchup between Birmingham Southern College and Marietta College.
