Thursday's high school roundup: Hurricanes fight back to close out regular season with tie

Visiting Suwannee High jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half, but Gainesville found a way to respond, fighting back to force a 2-2 tie Thursday night in the boys’ soccer regular season finale.

The Hurricanes’ Jean Mairena buried a goal in the 46th minute, assisted by Finn Smith, to make the score 2-1. In the 77th minute, Brendan Foley squared the match at two off a Jamie Proia helper, and GHS hung on the rest of the way.

The Hurricanes conclude their regular season with an overall record of 11-1-4. Gainesville next plays in the district semifinal next Friday at Ormond Beach. The 'Canes will face the first-round winner between Daytona Beach Mainland and Belleview.

Keystone Heights 8, Interlachen 0: At Keystone Heights, senior captain Jason Lauzurique celebrated Senior Night with a hat trick, and sophomore Logan Spence also scored three times, invoking the mercy rule at halftime to put an early end to this one. Senior Chris Truman finished with two goals and two assists, and Spence also added an assist, boosting the Indians’ record to 10-9-4. The Rams fell to 1-8-1. Keystone resumes play Wednesday when it hosts the district tournament quarterfinals against Interlachen.

Columbia 5, Clay 0: At Lake City, Marcos Medina-Rodriguez scored three times, and Trey Hingson tallied a pair of goals, as the Tigers rolled to victory in their regular season finale. Medina-Rodriguez found the back of the net twice on penalty kicks, while Hingson also scored one of his two tallies on a free kick. Colby Strickland secured the shut out in net. The Tigers wrap up their regular season 12-4-1. The Blue Devils are 5-5-4.

Santa Fe 8, Dixie County 0: At Alachua, freshman Riley Baker recorded a hat trick, and the Raiders blew past the Bears for an easy win. Jasmine Perez, Riley Applebee, Shelley Latner, Emily Joiner and Savannah Barnes all found the back of the net to round out the scoring, and Kyiana Williams had a pair of assists. Santa Fe improves its record to 8-5.
