PREP ROUNDUP: 3 area girls weightlifters win state titles
Madison Atwood of North Port, Port Charlotte's Tara Yount and Charlotte's Daphnie Toussaint bring home gold
Three lifters from three different area schools won gold at the FHSAA Girls State Weightlifting Championships on Saturday.
North Port’s Madison Atwood captured the Class 3A 169-pound weight class with a 185 bench press, 220 clean and jerk for a 405 total at St. Cloud High School. Atwood won the class by 50 pounds.
In the Class 2A Meet at Suwannee High School in Live Oak, Port Charlotte High’s Tara Yount and Charlotte High’s Daphnie Toussaint captured state crowns.
Yount took the 183-pound class with a 200-185-385 to prevail by 15 pounds.
Toussaint captured the 199-pound weight class with a 190-155-345 to also claim the title by 15 pounds.
In the team scoring, Port Charlotte finished second in 2A behind only winner Arnold High, 22-19. Charlotte was fourth with 14 points.
North Port ended third in Class 3A with 20 points behind only winner Navarre (30) and runner-up Vero Beach (26).
Also in the second (heavier weight classes) session, North Port’s Tristain Atwood, Madison’s twin sister, was second at 154 with a 180-195-375.
Aubrey Jarvis of North Port placed fourth at 3A 154 with a 180-185-365.
Kassidy Gaw of Port Charlotte grabbed sixth at 2A 199 with a 165-160-325.
In the first session, the Pirates’ Alexa Estevez finished second in the Class 2A 139-pound weight class. Estevez benched 160 pounds and lifted 150 in the clean and jerk for a 315 total, five pounds behind winner Madison Upshaw of Mosley’s 160-160-320.
Also, Samantha Sineath of the Pirates grabbed second at 129 with a 170-175-345, 55 pounds off the pace.
Charlotte’s Huyen Lee also was state runner up in 101 with a 160-115-275, 15 pounds behind the winner.
Others reaching the medal stand were Port Charlotte’s Angelina Marquez (fifth in 110 with a 125-135-260) and Charlotte’s Gianna Creola (sixth in 129 with a 155-155-310).
In Class 3A, Venice’s Kylie Flaherty-Cohn (fifth in 129 with a 160-145-305) and Jacey Tippman (fifth in 139 with a 160-140-300).

Bidwell Memorial
Lemon Bay won the title with 230 points, beating runner-up Brandon (190.5) in the 17-team field Saturday at Lemon Bay High School.
Other area finishers: 7. Bayshore (66.5), 11. North Port (31), 13. Imagine School at North Port (29), 15. Port Charlotte (14), 16. Riverview (12) and 17. Booker (11).
The Manta Rays had three champions: 170-pound weight class Chase Alden, 182 Lance Schyck and 195 Louis Baldor.
