Lake Gibson leads after 1st day in 2A-2 final

LAKELAND — Lake Gibson advanced 10 wrestlers to the semifinals and took the team lead on Friday after the first day of the Class 2A Region 2 wrestling tournament at Lake Gibson High School.

The Braves have 90 points with Winter Springs (83) and Harmony (81.5) close behind them.

“I think our team wrestled well today,” said Lake Gibson coach Danny Walker. “We set ourselves nicely for tomorrow’s round. Tomorrow is going to be a new day of challenges and we have to elevate our game even more.”

Advancing for Lake Gibson were Austin Gehr (113), Alex Walker (120), Hayden Whidden (126), Blake Walker (132), Jason Lemmond (145), Brendon Abdon (152), Frank Solarzano (160), Raul Soto (170), Connor Hackett (182) and Tristan Middlebrook (220).

Kathleen had two wrestlers advance to the semifinals, Antonio Turner (160) and Jeremiah Jackson (285), who collected two pins.

Lakeland’s Rudy Destin (195) also advanced to the semifinals.

McKeel 2nd at 1A-3

Polk County was represented quite well in the region's first day of competition as McKeel concluded the day in second place with 67 points, followed by Tenoroc in third place with 61.5 point.

Mulberry is close behind in fifth place with 54 points. Lake Region (23) is in 16th place, and Discovery (10)  is in 27th place.

Four McKeel wrestlers advanced to the semifinals, Yodock Guy (120), Owen McNabb (138), Vish Williams (152) and Wayne Campbell (160).

Tenoroc advanced Kris Hunter (126), Gabriel Leach (132), Leighton Tinch (145), Nick Haworth (170) and Darrin Gillians (220).

Mulberry advanced Eric Cooper (195) and Joquorious Taylor (285).

Jenkins in 13th place at 3A-2

George Jenkins collected 26 team points and is tied for 13th place with George Steinbrenner and Lehigh at the 3A-2 region meet.

The Eagles' Nathan Peoples (195) collected two wins for George Jenkins to advance to Saturday’s semifinals.

Azarious Williams (220) earned two wins for Bartow to reach the semifinals.

Kissimmee Osceola leads after day one with 86 points, followed by Palm Harbor (74.5) and Riverdale (69).
