Five locals have been named as winners of the Florida Dairy Farmers awards.

Canterbury midfielder Jasmine Perez-Acosta won the Class 2A Girls Soccer Player of the Year honors.

Perez-Acosta led Lee and Collier counties with 42 goals. She also added 20 assists, which ranked second in the area behind North Fort Myers star Michelle Horan, who had 21.

Perez-Acosta's counterpart on the boys' side, Canterbury forward McLaren Baggett, won the Class 2A Boys Soccer Player of the Year award after notching 30 goals and 11 assists, including the game-winner against Westminster Academy in the state semifinal. Baggett ended the season one goal ahead of Lely's Kener Herrera for the most in Lee or Collier.

After winning the program's first winter state title in boys soccer, Canterbury coach Kevin Schoensee was named the Class 2A Boys Soccer Coach of the Year. The Cougars ended their successful state title campaign with a 21-3-1 record.

Joining Schoensee was Gulf Coast coach Bryan Billingsley, who also captured a state title this season in Class 7A. The Sharks (20-3-2) defeated Flanagan, Cypress Bay, Columbus, Spanish River, and Plant during their playoff run.

Aaron Jones of Evangelical Christian School goes up for a shot during their game against Lely on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2020, in the Gateway Charter Christmas Shootout at Gateway Charter High School in Fort Myers.

ECS forward Aaron Jones became the first Sentinel in program history to win the Boys Basketball Player of the Year award in Class 2A.

The Southeastern University signee is ECS' all-time leading scorer (1,868) after a season where he led the state in total points (744) as he put up 28.6 points a night while grabbing 11.3 rebounds, dishing out 2.1 assists and blocking nearly 2 shots per game.

"Aaron has had an amazing impact to our basketball program and the entire ECS school community," ECS coach Scott Guttery said. "He is the total package — player, student, and a leader amongst his peers. I am so proud of him and excited that he has received this award."

Softball

Bishop Verot 3, Naples 2: Victoria Ash did it all in Thursday night's win over the Golden Eagles.

The sophomore went the distance, striking out 12 Naples hitters while letting up five hits. She also reached base three times, including what would be the game-winning RBI double in the sixth inning.

"That was just what I was talking about to them," Bishop Verot coach Chris Gatewood said. "They find a way to win. It's not always going to be with the bats. You're not always going to come out here and put up six, seven, or eight runs. We learn a lot more from tight games than you do from blowing teams out.

"I think we learned a lot about our team tonight, and we can find different ways to win right now."

The Golden Eagles (8-5) opened things up in the fourth inning when Nia Cherenfant led off with a single. Two batters later, Gabby Rascher doubled in Cherenfant.

Ash opened the bottom half after getting hit by a pitch and scored on Lillie Layne's double to left-center field, which Cherenfant nearly caught while diving.

Ashley Smallwood would briefly put the Vikings ahead in the fifth, as Aubrey Gatewood scored from second. In the top of the sixth, Rascher answered again, stinging a double to right-center for Naples, which plated Cherenfant for the second time.

ECS 10, Florida Christian 7: Zoe Yzaguirre pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts for the Sentinels. Jazelle Rivera had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored, while Gabi Vera had two hits with an RBI. Kyle Shaw scored four times while adding a pair of hits and an RBI.

Dunbar 14, Golden Gate 13: Ja’kayla Taylor, Ca’mia Bryant, Raija Mottley and Jekirre Shird combined for 14 hits with a triple and a home run.

Shird picked up her first win of the season at the mound, as Dunbar moves to 3-5 on the year.

Riverdale 11, Gulf Coast 1: Azlynn Gomes went 2-for-4 for the Raiders, while Jolynn Kubala and Sophia Castneda went 2-for-3.

Taylor Clayton notched another win in the circle for Riverdale (9-3).

Estero 16, East Lee County 0: The Wildcats (1-7) got their first win of the season thanks to Jade Hehl's 3-for-3 performance with three RBI.

Sophomore Jolei Wrightson got her first win on the mound.

Barron Collier 7, Bonita Springs 0: The Cougars dominated at the plate, led by Olivia Picard, notching three hits in four at-bats while adding two RBI. Reese Gill and Gabby Alvarez had two hits each.

"Our girls did a nice job tonight," Barron Collier coach Rich Costante said. "We put some good swings in the ball and drove in runs when we needed to."

Gill flirted with a no-hitter and ended the game allowing just one hit while striking out 17.

"As the game goes on, she keeps getting better and better," Costante added. "We had a great week, going 3-0 and only allowing one run this week.  Hopefully we can continue playing good ball next week."
