Alexa Vega's six goals lead Vero Beach lacrosse to big win

The Vero Beach girls lacrosse team jumped all over Hagerty in the first half and coasted to a 16-5 victory behind six goals from sophomore Alexa Vega.

Vega scored four of Vero's first six goals as they built a 6-1 lead, but Hagerty closed the gap to 6-3 midway through the first half.

Two goals from senior Mia Horvit gave Vero Beach (9-1) an 8-3 halftime edge.

Senior Emily Adams netted all four of her goals after halftime and finished the night with a team-high four assists while Horvit added a pair of goals to give her a five-goal night.

Junior goalkeeper Joy Coffey made four stops, sophomore Kerrigan Gilmore had a goal and an assist and junior Jojo Kowalski added two assists for Vero Beach. 

Baseball

Vero Beach 3, Springboro, Ohio 2 (11 innings): Preston Keen scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch to keep Vero Beach (13-0) undefeated.

After scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth, Vero saw Springboro tie the game on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh.

Travis Camp worked 4⅔ innings of relief, allowing three hits and one run. Derek Morales threw the final four innings, allowing three hits in a scoreless outing to earn the win. Keen and Max Swords each had 2-for-4 days with a double for Vero Beach.

Jensen Beach 2, Fort Pierce Central 0: Patrick Ward went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI to support starter Connor Honea, who tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out six for the Falcons (9-1). Matt Kautz went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Jensen Beach.

Treasure Coast 3, South Fork 2: Jackson Abbott scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh as the Titans (7-4) held off the Bulldogs. Julian Jennings and Logan Zavala each had two hits for Treasure Coast.

Kaiden Jones and Tyler Graham had two hits to lead the offense for South Fork (6-8).

Lincoln Park Academy 5, Centennial 1: Matt Pizzarello struck out eight in a complete-game effort to lead the way for the Greyhounds (5-5). Greyson Cripps went 3-for-3 with a triple, Nathan Gould had two hits and two RBI, Layton Rivas drove in two runs and Ryan Rodriguez added an RBI for Lincoln Park.

Zach Staples went 2-for-3 and drove in the lone run for the Eagles (9-5).

Sebastian River 4, Melbourne Central Catholic 2: Kalib Colon tossed a complete-game, allowing five hits, two unearned runs and struck out three in the win for the Sharks (9-3). Connor Nightingale and Christian Snow each had two RBI, with Nightingale and Kody Flynt picking up doubles for Sebastian River.

Port St. Lucie 8, Okeechobee 4: Khamani Wright struck out six in six innings and drove in a run at the plate to lead the way for the Jaguars (2-11). Michael King went 2-for-3 with an RBI and stole four bases and Nick Thomas had a double and an RBI for Port St. Lucie.

Mason Diefenbach and Gavin Kindell had two-hit days, Jayce Markham drove in two runs and Bryce Ward had a double and two RBI for Okeechobee.

Jensen Beach 7, Springboro, Ohio 5 (From Monday): Matt Kautz, Patrick Gillen, Kevin Smith and Chase Higgins each had two hits as the Falcons (8-1) bashed out 13 hits in the win. Smith had two doubles, Higgins drove in three runs, Kautz had two RBI and Chris Knier drove in a pair of runs and threw a scoreless seventh to earn the save. Kyle Derrenbacker and Egan Keeler worked three innings each with Derrenbacker earning the win for Jensen Beach.

Sebastian River 13, Fort Pierce Westwood 1 (6 innings, from Monday): Nate Martin struck out five in five innings and Zachary Santiso had two hits, including a double and drove in three runs for the Sharks (8-3). Christian Snow had two RBI for Sebastian River.

Softball

South Fork 5, Martin County 2: Abbey Moore went 3-for-4 with three doubles, scored two runs and drove in another to lead the way for the Bulldogs (7-5). Malea Rolle had two hits including a double and two RBI, Sophia Turull had two hits and Katie Kidwell struck out eight in a complete-game effort for South Fork.

Madison Baird had two hits, Brooke Vega and Bayli Legg each had a double and an RBI and Emily MacMullen struck out 12 in six innings for the Tigers (8-3).

Flag Football

Centennial 20, Vero Beach 0: Mya Heath and Qayani Pryor both took back interceptions for touchdowns as the Eagles (4-1) won their fourth game in a row and posted its fourth shutout in a row. Olivia Kaes added a 12-yard touchdown run for Centennial.

Fort Pierce Westwood 18, Jensen Beach 13: Rayna Duzant had 131 receiving yards and grabbed three touchdown catches from quarterback Lawayndra Walker and added an interception on defense to lead the way for the Panthers (6-1). Walker threw for 192 yards and added 41 rushing yards, Trenecia Merricks had 47 rushing yards and had four flag pulls on defense, Velise Destile had six flag pulls and Torre McCall had an interception for Fort Pierce Westwood.

Boys Lacrosse

St. Edward’s 16, Jupiter Christian 4: Oscar Lindenthal scored four goals and added an assist to lead the way for the Pirates (10-3). Ricky Savage scored three goals and had three assists, Ford Norris also scored three goals, Drew Sternberg scored two goals and added two assists, Riker Pratt scored two goals, Danny Richmond scored a goal and assisted on six St. Edward’s goals, Will Russell added a goal and Liam Murphy made 11 saves in goal.

Jensen Beach 10, Dwyer 9: Chase Walker scored three goals and added four assists to lead the way for the Falcons (4-7). Kyle Willis scored two goals and added two assists, Connor Ferriera also scored two goals, Frankie Howard, Jason Loiudice and Trenton Stanley all added a goal each and Patrick Barry and Rocco Smith each made eight saves in goal for Jensen Beach.

Pine Crest 12, Vero Beach 5: Elliot Stevens scored two goals, Landon Farrow, Will Dunlap and Zeke Ceant added a goal apiece and Drew Kane made 11 saves for Vero Beach.

Girls Lacrosse

South Fork 22, John Carroll Catholic 1: On Senior Night, seniors Alexus Gosselin, Kira Chenoweth and Jenna Rinzel each scored two goals to lead the way for the Bulldogs (8-2). Kayla Jones scored a team-high four goals and added three assists, Victoria Francisco scored three goals, Bella Marucci scored two goals, Katie Hale, Zoe Williams, Molly O’Donnell, Ashley Stocker, Reagan Gallo, Avery Weikart and Emma Boyer added one goal apiece and Sydnie O’Connor made two saves for South Fork.

Jensen Beach 20, Cardinal Newman 12: Meg Schoppe scored six goals and added three assists and Tatum Swope also scored six goals to lead the way for the Falcons (6-2). Emma Elliott scored three goals and added an assist, Carli Watson scored two goals and added an assist, Ashley Dunnuck and Ella Boosinger each scored a goal and Grace Thomas made seven saves for Jensen Beach.

St. Edward’s 8, Sebastian River 3 (From Monday): Mary Kathryn Watson scored five goals to lead the Pirates (3-8) to victory. Carrington Brown, Alice Grace Lockwood and Ellie Schrock added a goal apiece and Izzy Jennings made 10 saves for St. Edward’s.
