Spring Football Previews: Menendez, St. Augustine spring into action

High school spring football has arrived and many local teams are set to play this week, starting with Menendez and St. Augustine on Thursday. Nease was also set to face Palatka on Thursday, but that game has been rescheduled to next Tuesday.

Here’s a look at what to expect: 

Menendez at Palm Coast Matanzas, 7 p.m. 

The last time these teams met the Pirates defeated the Falcons, 13-3. Both teams had closer to .500 records last season and made it to the FHSAA playoffs. The Falcons lost in the 5A regional semifinal and the Pirates were defeated in the second round of the 6A bracket.

Menendez travels to Palm Coast to take on rival Matanzas on Thursday.

Bishop Kenny at St. Augustine, 6:30 p.m. 

The Yellow Jackets and Crusaders had polar opposite seasons last fall. St. Augustine won 10 games while Bishop Kenny was only able to eke out one win over West Nassau.  After first round playoff exits in 2018 and 2019, St. Augustine returned to its winning ways in 2020, reaching the state semifinals. 

The Yellow Jackets ended up losing a 49-48, 3OT thriller to Lake Minneola.
