EMMA — Eighty minutes of girls soccer wasn’t enough to settle matters between No. 7 Westview and No. 5 Trinity at Greenlawn on Saturday at Westview.
Neither was two seven-minute overtime periods.
So things went to penalty kicks.
And it was the Warriors dominating the penalty kick round 3-0 to win their second consecutive Class 1A sectional title.
Westview head coach Jesse Ward said he and his team actually didn’t work on PKs as much this season.
There’s actually a thought process behind that, Ward said, or to be more specific, the lack of a thought process. “We didn’t want them thinking about it,” he said.
That changed Friday night, when the Warriors actually worked out on their field — something else they don’t typically do.
The Warriors (13-5-2) had their chances in the opening 40 minutes, with seven shots (five of those on goal).
The drama-laden PK round started with both teams missing their opening shot. Westview’s Morgan Riegsecker then knocked through her shot. Trinity’s second shooter’s shot sailed harmlessly over the crossbar.
Kelsie Ward gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead when she made her kick. Titan keeper Charis Balsbaugh had her kick blocked by Westview counterpart Bre Cory.
That set the stage for Westview junior Janissa Lehman, a late addition to the Warrior PK lineup, to seal the win for her team.
Lehman buried her shot to the left post, emptying the Warrior sideline and sending Westview to the regional semis.
Lehman’s performance in practice Friday night vaulted her into Saturday’s PK rotation were she to be needed, Coach Ward said.
“I was a little nervous, but I knew if I just stayed calm and stuck to what I’ve been practicing, then it would be OK,” Lehman said.
Reading the Trinity keeper before taking her shot made all the difference when her turn came, Lehman said.
“I normally go to my left side but I noticed she was going to her left side,” Lehman said. “I really stared at that right corner so I would be confident going to my left side. I think staring at that corner threw her off.”
Westview will travel to LaVille Wednesday to take on the Lancers (11-6) in a 6 p.m. regional semifinal. Trinity finished 15-4.
