After coming above water, Lawrence High teammates Maddie Dean and Aubrey Fischer looked up at the scoreboard during Tuesday’s meet at LHS.

One second separated the two of them, with Dean taking first in the 100 backstroke with a 1:03.49. Fischer, who was actually the top seed entering the race, came in second with a 1:04.50. They gave each other a high five before exiting the pool. By then, the outcome of the meet had been determined.

Lawrence’s girls swim and dive team cruised to its sixth win in as many meets. The Lions won 10 of the 12 events, scoring 492 total points. Washburn Rural, the runner-up in the event, placed second with 292 points. The undefeated streak was never in doubt.

“I knew we were going to be better this year than in the past,” Dean said. “But I definitely am surprised that it is this much of a difference.”

The key to this dominating start by the Lions can be pinpointed by looking at the final results from the 100 backstroke. Not only were Dean and Fischer the first two to touch the wall, but sophomore Iris Sherron tallied third in the event with a 1:06.12. Senior Jillian Wilson came in seventh.

In nearly every event, Lawrence has multiple swimmers at the top of the leaderboard. The Lions have several scorers in every race. That was the case during Senior Night, even if the team has performed better this year.

“We didn’t have a whole lot of best times, but we competed well,” LHS coach Kent McDonald said. “This is our last home meet, I think some of them just wanted to swim and enjoy that.”

Seniors Emily Guo and Morgan Jones were the only LHS swimmers to win multiple events. Jones placed first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.84 and 500 freestyle with a mark of 5:26.76. Guo clinched first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.87 and the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:09.29.

“It is nice to get a win in our home pool on Senior Night,” Guo said. “A majority of our team has been improving or remaining close on their best times, which is always a bonus.”

Sophomore Madi Heckman placed first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.50. Fischer, a sophomore, took first in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 1:01.72.

Dean, Marian Frick, Fischer and Guo started off the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. Jones, Heckman, Fischer and Guo closed the meet out by securing first in the 400 freestyle relay. Frick, Carmen Braden, Jamie Abernathy and Heckman also notched a victory in the 200 freestyle relay.

LHS will compete in a meet at Free State at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The Lions have just two meets left in the regular season, and now they hope they can keep their perfect record alive entering the postseason.

“We want to stay undefeated for as a long as we can, at least until state,” Dean said.

LHS boys tennis takes 4th

Behind a total-team effort, the Lions placed fourth out of 10 teams at the Topeka West tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Cooper Wright and Kanak Masten placed second in the No. 1 doubles bracket, posting a 5-1 record on the day. It was business as usual for the dynamic duo, which improved to 12-3 on the season.

At No. 2 doubles, Logan and Dunn recorded fifth with a 5-1 clip. They are now 9-2 on the year, as their only two losses came to the doubles teams that took first and second place in the Topeka West tournament. Drew Dean, the team’s top singles player, notched ninth with a 4-2 record. Kirk Johnson went 2-4 to claim 16th.

“Was very pleased with the way our team performed today,” LHS coach Chris Marshall said. “Overall today is the best we have performed as a team, and I look forward to seeing what we can do the rest of the season.”

LHS softball falls on road

It was a night to forget for the Lawrence softball team.

Lawrence (1-8) managed just one hit in an 18-0 loss to Olathe West Tuesday night. The game ended after four innings. Senior Angelina Harjo recorded the team’s only hit in the loss.

LHS will travel to Shawnee Heights at 5:30 p.m Friday.

Quick work by FSHS softball

There was no doubt about whether or not Free State’s softball team could improve to 10-0.

FSHS scored 20 runs in the opening frame on its way to a 21-0 road win over Shawnee Mission West Tuesday night. The game ended after three innings due to run rule, as freshman Kay Lee Richardson was the winning pitcher for her first victory of her career.

Sophomore Sara Roszak clubbed two homers, including a grand glam, to finish the game with eight RBIs. Lauryn Jones notched a grand slam of her own, finishing with seven RBIs. Richardson recorded her team-leading sixth homer.

Free State will face Washburn Rural at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Maurer Sports Complex. It is a rematch from last year’s state semifinal matchup.

Firebirds suffer 5-0 loss

Free State’s girls soccer team was handed a 5-0 defeat by Shawnee Mission Northwest Tuesday night.

The Firebirds fall to 1-5-1 on the year following their third consecutive loss. It is the third time in as many matches that FSHS has been unable to score a goal. Free State had not scored since April 2, when the team poured in eight scores during an 8-0 win over Shawnee Mission North.

Free State will travel to Olathe East at 7 p.m. Thursday.

FSHS girls swim claims runner-up

Free State’s girls swim and dive team netted another second-place finish, scoring 198 points to claim runner-up at the Olathe East triangular. Shawnee Mission East won the event with 284 points.

Payton Krug notched the only event victory by the Firebirds in the the three-team event. Krug placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:12.77 to take first place. FSHS also placed in the top three in a pair of relay races.

Kasey Dunn, Abbey Hossler, Nora Agah and Krug claimed second in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:09.77. Hossler, Emmaleigh Hancock, Alayna Baker and Richa Joshi took third in the 200 freestyle relay with a mark of 1:58.84.

Free State will have its home meet at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Heinz scores four goals in loss

Emily Heinz of Bishop Seabury performed sheer soccer magic during a loss Monday night at Eudora.

Heinz was devastating, scoring four goals for the Seahawks in a 5-4 loss to the Cardinals. BSA, which has had trouble fielding a full team due to early-season injuries, had just one sub in the latest loss. The score was tied at 2-2 at the intermission, though Eudora’s depth proved to be too much to overcome.

BSA goalkeeper Brooke Spurlock recorded an assist on one of the four goals by Heinz. It marked the second consecutive one-score loss for the Seahawks, who dropped a 4-3 decision to Cornerstone last Friday.
