Rhodes buries Beloit, 12-4

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Rhodes men's lacrosse team capped off their spring break campaign on Wednesday with a decisive 12-4 win over Beloit College.

The Lynx improve to 6-2 on the season, while the Buccaneers fall to 0-3 on the year.

The battle started as a stalemate, when Beloit broke the scoring silence at the 9:32 mark. The goal awoke the Lynx offense, and Rhodes netted a pair of goals to end the quarter from Ryan Rennelly and Owen Koorbusch to push ahead 2-1.

Austin Bridgeforth netted the opening goal of the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Beloit managed two more goals, but they would be their last of the half. Rhodes rattled off four goals in less than two minutes to break the game open with a 7-3 lead. Justin Powers netted the first at the 1:44 mark, with Mattison Hamilton scoring his own goal less than ten seconds later. Koorbusch found the back of the net in a man-up situation with 48 seconds to play, and as the halftime clock expired Andrew Salamunovich worked a shot into the goal for the final goal of the half.

The second half was all Lynx, as they scored five goals to one Buc goal. Bridgeforth and Fennelly each netted a pair of scores in the third quarter. Jason Lee put the finishing touches on the Lynx win in the fourth quarter when he scored the lone goal of the half to give Rhodes the 12-4 victory.

Rhodes outshot its counterparts 34-15, with 25 shots on goal. The Lynx were strong in the faceoff category, going 14-of-20 on the night. The Lynx also scooped up more ground balls by a count of 28-11.

Thomas Matthews got the start in the cage for the Lynx, where he played all 60 minutes, grabbing nine saves while in goal to grab his sixth win of the year.

Rhodes will be back in action on March 18 when they open conference play and head to Conway, Ark. to take on Hendrix College.
