Baylor girls dominate D-II tennis

Baylor tennis coach Dustin Kane has learned that when two of his players are competing with any sort of championship on the line, it's best to relinquish his role as leader.

So as teammates Samantha Caswell and Sonja Brkovic fought it out for the Division II-AA East/Middle Region tournament singles championship, Kane just observed.

The freshman Caswell pulled out the three-setter, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, improving on the runner-up finish she had as an eighth-grader.

"As a coach, there's really nothing that you can do," Kane said. "You just sit there and observe."

Baylor claimed a sweep in the girls' titles, as Harper Caswell and Sarah Berchuck took the doubles crown by defeating Harpeth Hall's Kat Caire and Caitlin Casey in straight sets.

"It was a good day for Baylor tennis today," Kane said. "Sonja played really well in both of her matches, as did Samantha.

"Our doubles also stepped up."

Maggie Crumbliss and McCall Morgan took third in doubles.

GPS will enter a pair of singles players in the state tournament, as Bronte Goodhue and Emma McCallie finished third and fourth, respectively. The top five players in each draw advance to next week's Spring Fling tennis tournament.

On the boys' side, both Baylor and McCallie will take a singles player to the state tournament. The Raiders also will take both of their doubles teams, while the Tornado advance Daniel Pare and Evan Watkins with a fifth-place finish.

Michael Goldstein and Nathan Schley took second in doubles, while Eric Roddy and Zach Moore finished third.

Anderson Scarpa finished third in the singles draw, defeating McCallie's Bobby Brouner in the consolation match.
