Independence won the battle, but Brentwood won the war Tuesday night as the 2017 WILLCO Awards Presented by Walker Chevrolet were announced in the annual ceremony at The Factory at Franklin.

The Eagles picked up 12 awards, including sweeping the football category as David Demke (Defensive Player of the Year), Brandon Hines (Offensive Player of the Year) and Landon Guidry (Player of the Year) all picked up individual honors. The school also picked up player of the year honors in boys’ basketball (Grayson Murphy), girls’ wrestling (Zanaya Shropshire), track (TJ Sheffield) and baseball (Robert Hassell).

Murphy also claimed the Male Athlete of the Year Award and basketball coach Greg Glass was honored as the Male Coach of the Year. His state semifinal basketball team picked up the Male Team of the Year accolades. Independence also grabbed two special awards, with senior Hunter Garstin, injured as a freshman in a wrestling match, named the Berry Farm’s Chiropractic Courage Award winner and Hunter Dupree getting surprised with the John Maher Builders Sportsmanship Award, which included a $5,0000 scholarship from John and Margie Maher.

Brentwood also needed a truck to get the hardware home, garnering 10 awards. Brodey Hasty (boys cross country), Annie Paris (girls golf), Trenton Johnson (boys golf), Somer Henry (girls tennis), Sam Fischer (boys tennis), Camy Barber (girls bowling), Logan Eggleston (volleyball) and Hannah Koenig (softball) all picked up player of the year awards in their respective sports.

Eggleston added the Female Athlete of the Year Award to her resume as her coach, Barbara Campbell, was named Female Coach of the Year. They were joined by their now four-time defending state champion volleyball teammates to pick up Female Team of the Year honors.

Brentwood grabbed one of the two biggest awards, gaining the Director’s Cup, signifying the best overall program for the year in Division I, which includes the six largest schools in the county.

Page nabbed the Director’s Cup in Division II, which includes Page, Fairview and Nolensville. The Patriots’ Emma Sanders was also named the Student-Athlete of the Year, carrying a 4.668 grade point average. She also scored a 35 out of a possible 36 on the ACT exam.

Franklin dominated the soccer awards, with Peyton DePriest and Joseph Malloy being named Player of the Year in the female and male categories. Jack Shrader won the same award in wrestling and Erin Gardner took home the honor for Cheer.

Annika Sleenhof (girls cross country), Riley White (girls track), Haley Diggs (dance), and Kiera Downey (girls basketball) all picked up player of the year honors from Ravenwood. The Raptors’ Cam Wilson was named the Media Student of the Year.
