Trenton Peabody boys basketball hires Wes Miller as coach
When Tim Allen resigned over the summer to move to Memphis with his new wife, Trenton Peabody principal Tim Haney didn't have to look far to find the right boys basketball coach.
Wes Miller, who had spent the past five years at South Fulton, had already been hired to be a math teacher at Peabody, so it was an easy fit to make him the new boys basketball coach a few months later.
"He is an established head coach," Haney said. "He has been a head coach at a big school like Brighton, broke in at JCM and spent the past five years at South Fulton, so he has 10 years of coaching experience. And we have had trouble beating him."
Miller was ready to step right in and take over.
"I am really excited to be here," Miller said. "Tim and I are good friends, and he always talked about how great the school was. Being here for just a little hit, I see that people don't leave. It is a blessing to take this job."
He did get to take the team through summer workouts, so the initial transition period has passed.
"We didn't play as much as I wanted to," Miller said. "But I was impressed with how hard they play, how fast they play and how unselfish they are with the basketball. They want to win, and they really enjoy playing with each other. They do a lot of the little things right."
Having known Allen, Miller knows what was instilled in these players through the years, and he believes that has helped with the transition period."
"They are such great kids, and they accepted what Coach Allen was teaching them," Miller said. "I want to pick up the pace a little bit, and I want to do a few new things offensively and a few new things defensively. They pick up on things really quick, and they like what I am trying to do. They are buying in more every day."
Now the team must wait for practice to start on Oct. 30 and Hall of Champions games to kick the season off on Nov. 13.
