Houston County's Morgan Robinson earns second straight All Area boys golf award

Houston County's Morgan Robinson rarely spends a day without a golf club in his hand.

If he's not out on a golf course competing for the Fighting Irish, he's out on the course working on his game.

That game has served him well over the years, and for the second time in two years, Robinson has been named The Leaf-Chronicle All Area Boys Golfer of the Year.

Houston County's Morgan Robinson competes in a golf tournament earlier this fall. Robinson finished fourth overall at state competition for the Small School division and has been named The Leaf-Chronicle All Area Boys Golfer of the Year for the second straight time.

"These kinds of awards I never take for granted because it's not often that an athlete from Houston County gets recognized like this," Robinson said.

Robinson was again the catalyst for Houston County's success. He helped the Irish capture a District 9 Small Class championship and a Region 5 Small Class title as well. His  average of 73 was the best on the team, and he advanced to state competition for the third straight year.

Houston County's Morgan Robinson checks out one of his irons on the driving range before a practice this past fall.

"Last year I was shooting in the high 70s and low 80s, but I've been able to consistently hit the low and mid-70s this year," Robinson said. "And it's because I've worked really hard on my short game."

Robinson ended his junior campaign with a fourth-place finish at state, his best output.

"I'm a long-ball hitter," he said. "But I knew that if I wanted to compete at a high level at state, I had to get better with my short game, so I spent all last spring and summer working on that."
