Halls hires football coach Jeremy Bosken from Cleveland

Halls High School's new football coach, Jeremy Bosken.

Halls' new football coach is Jeremy Bosken, who was offensive coordinator and strength coach at Cleveland last season.

The biggest selling point for Bosken was Halls' community, followed by the administration's "rock solid" support for the program.

The 36-year-old was last a head coach at David Crockett, where he became the winningest coach with 20-23 record from 2013-16. Stepping away from the head coaching role and working under Scott Cummings at Cleveland taught Bosken a lot from a managerial standpoint.

"It's understanding what the process is," he said, "establishing those little missions every day for your staff to accomplish, for the kids to accomplish. We've established those goals in better ways."

Before going into coaching, Bosken was a Marine for six years. Halls athletic director Meagan Booth sees that as a good fit for Halls.

"Being a Marine (makes Bosken a good fit)," Booth said. "Being a veteran, you bring a different skill set than a lot of people."

Bosken plans to bring the idea of small unit leadership, which the Marines uses, into football, as well as the discipline and accountability from the military.

Every coach, athletic director and director of schools Booth spoke to vouched for Bosken's work ethic and the relationships he builds with families as well as the players.

"He loves the kids, but holds them to high expectations," Booth said, "that's what we wanted."

Booth was looking for an offensive coach for a team with offensive talent. She was impressed with Bosken's reputation from his time at Crockett and under Cummings at Cleveland.

Bosken credited J.D. Overton with building an amazing foundation. He is looking forward to working with the players and coaches.

"I just don't want to screw it up," he said.

Overton resigned April 5 after six seasons, reaching the second round of the playoffs the last three years. He coached the Red Devils to a Region 2-5A championship this past season, their first in 21 years. He was named the region’s coach of the year. Halls finished 6-6, losing to South-Doyle 31-28 in the second round of the playoffs. The loss snapped a four-game win streak.

Halls received more than 50 applications for the position and brought in eight candidates to interview last week.

The school also has an open position for a boys basketball coach after Jonathan Smooth resigned last week. Booth has received about 15 inquiries a day after posting the position and expects to have a coach in place by the end of the school year.
