Humboldt is searching for a new football coach.

Humboldt football players prepare for the next snap during their second round playoff game at Union City in 2016.

Less than three months after being hired as Humboldt's new football coach, Daniel Nowell has decided to leave the Vikings.

"After just careful thought and consideration, I just don't think that was the job that was meant for me at this stage of my career," Nowell said. "There were several different things that I thought and considered over and at my age and this stage of my career, I just felt that this wasn't something that I needed to undertake."

Nowell, who is 70 years old, said he resigned at the end of spring practice during mid-May. A number a factors contributed to his decision to leave. One was Principal James Walker leaving for an elementary school in Jackson. Another factor was a lack of commitment during the spring.

He added the administration had nothing to do with his departure. It was a decision he made on his own.

"I didn't want to drag it on and just kind of made up my mind and that way Humboldt can move on and hopefully find somebody that's willing to take this on," Nowell said. "I think we got a lot accomplished in a short period of time while I was there."

The next coach at Humboldt will be the Vikings' fourth, including interim coach Joseph Shepard, in the last calendar year. Humboldt went 0-10 last season and the next coach will have to rebuild the program from the ground up.
