Memphis high school football: Top 10 games of Week 10

Khari Thompson
Memphis Commercial Appeal
Briarcrest takes on MUS last Friday.

Game of the Week

Central (6-1, 0-1 8-6A) at Germantown (8-0, 1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Germantown is on a 19-game regular-season winning streak. Memphis commitment Trevis Hopper and the Central defense will try to contain the Germantown offense that has put up at least 31 points in every game this season. Germantown's defense also has pulled its weight, holding five opponents to seven points or fewer.

Wooddale (6-2) at Christian Brothers (7-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Wooddale, which is averaging 30 points per game, will face two SEC commitments on the Purple Wave's defensive line in William Norton (Georgia) and Christian James (Vanderbilt). Raymond Fracchia picked off two passes, and Al Wooten rushed for three touchdowns for Christian Brothers in last week's win over St. Benedict. Wooddale is coming off a bye week.

Covington (8-0) at Crockett Co. (5-3)

When: 7 p.m. Thursday

Covington has scored a 7-3A-leading 368 points. Its 28-27 win over South Gibson County last week was its first real challenge of the season. Marcus Hayes rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns in the win. It has been an up and down season for Crockett County, which won its first four games before dropping three of its past four.

Arlington (5-3, 1-1 7-6A) at Cordova (5-3, 1-1)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

The winner of this game puts its conference record over .500 and probably moves into second place in 7-6A. Cordova is 5-0 when the defense holds opponents to 14 points or fewer. Arlington was shut out 27-0 by Evangelical Christian on Oct. 5, but it has shown flashes of offensive potential, scoring 33 points or more five times. Cordova also is coming off a bye week after losing to Nashville's Pearl-Cohn on Oct. 6.

MASE (6-2, 4-1 8-1A) at Freedom Prep (5-3, 5-0)

When: 7 p.m. Thursday

Freedom Prep shut out B.T. Washington 43-0 on Oct. 5, and MASE beat Oakhaven 13-12 on Oct. 10. MASE has come a long way since last year's 0-10 season.

Harding Academy (5-3, 2-2 DII-AA West) at Evangelical Christian (6-2, 2-2)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

ECS and Harding score at a similar rate, with 247 and 242 total points, respectively. The question is whether ECS' defense, which is second-best in the region in points against, steps up. The Eagles shut out Arlington last week, while the Lions were on a bye week. Harding last played on Oct. 4 when it beat FACS 40-14.

Munford (5-3, 3-2 8-5A) at Kirby (7-1, 5-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Louisville commitment Jaden Johnson and the Kirby offense are averaging more than 46 points per game. The Cougars have scored 39 points or more against every team other than Olive Branch, including a 39-14 win over Southwind on Oct. 5. Munford has showed that it can put up points, too, like it did in its 40-14 win over Kingsbury on Oct. 5. Both teams are coming off bye weeks.

Collierville (4-4, 1-1 7-6A) at Houston (7-1, 3-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Collierville had a strong 35-10 win over St. George's last week, but the competition will be much stiffer this week. Houston won six games in a row since falling to Germantown on Aug. 24, including a 49-0 shutout last time out against Oakhaven.

Raleigh-Egypt (6-2) at Mitchell (4-4)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Raleigh-Egypt's past two wins were shutouts over King Prep and Melrose. This week the Pharaohs will host Mitchell, which won its past two games against Douglass and MAHS. Raleigh-Egypt has shown that it can dominate on the ground, with running back Romell Webb rushing for more than 400 yards in a game this season. Mitchell has held five opponents to 12 points or fewer this season.

White Station (3-5, 0-1 8-6A) at Whitehaven (6-2, 1-0)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

Whitehaven had a week off after dominating Central 35-14 two weeks ago. White Station has been shut out in its past two games against Germantown and Montgomery Bell Academy. But, in the two games before that, the Spartans put up a total of 89 points against Arlington and Bartlett.
