Madox Wilkey, Calvin Jackson lead 49-13 Red Bank romp

The Red Bank Lions set the tone early during their first-round state football playoff Friday night against visiting Smith County. The undefeated Lions routed the Owls 49-13.

The Lions quickly put points on the board, scoring 28 points in the first half.

"At this point in the season, everyone is talented and well coached," Red Bank coach Chris Brown said. "Smith County presented a lot of challenges, but I am very proud of our fast start tonight."

Red Bank (10-0) scored on its first possession. After a botched Smith County onside kick to start the game, the Lions took only seven plays to reach the end zone. Madox Wilkey connected with Calvin Jackson for an 8-yard touchdown pass.

Jackson added two other scores in the first half. He capped a Lions drive with a 1-yard run with 4:15 to go in the first quarter, and he cruised to a 54-yard rushing score with just under 10 minutes to go in the half.

Wilkey passed to Lumiere Strickland for a 19-yard touchdown with 1:34 to go in the second quarter to put the Lions up 28-0.

Red Bank extended its lead in the second half. Jackson added a 1-yard touchdown run, and Wilkey threw two more TD passes - to Nate Doss for a 52-yard score and to Michael Porter for a 22-yarder.

Smith County (4-7) put two scoring drives together in the second half but could not overcome its deficit.

Red Bank will face Sequatchie County in the second round at home next week.

"We are going to play another talented ball club, whoever it may be," Brown said before he knew the Indians' outcome against Brainerd. "We are going to have to focus on us, and hopefully we will have the same result (as tonight)."
