KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- Sullivan South’s Maddie Townsend will continue her volleyball career at Emory & Henry next season.

Townsend made the pledge official during ceremonies Tuesday afternoon at the high school.

“I looked at some other places (UVA-Wise, Catawba), but when I visited Emory & Henry and met everyone it just felt right,” said Townsend. “I really like all the players and the coaches.”

The rebuilding Wasps suffered through a tough 7-20 campaign this fall, but Townsend is happy to be part of the youth movement.

“They were really young this season and there will still be only one senior on the team next year, so I’m excited about that.”

During Townsend’s four-year career at South, the Lady Rebels never lost a conference match, won four straight Three Rivers Conference, District 1-AA Tournament and Region 1-AAA Tournament championships, and advanced to four straight TSSAA Class AA State Tournaments, winning the state championship in 2015.

The 5-10 middle blocker was recently named as the Three Rivers Conference Player of the Year for a second straight season and was selected as the Region 1-AA Tournament Most Valuable Player for a second time as well.

“I’m not sure where I’ll play there,” added Townsend. “They like me as a middle, but said i could maybe slide outside as well. Either way, I’ll be happy to just play and contribute.”
