Reese Dykes finishes a layup at Clarkrange

Cumberland County High School’s second trip to Fentress County ended like the first as the Clarkrange Buffalos were able to defeat the Jets 49-40 in non-district basketball action.

“Foul trouble hurt us,” said CCHS head coach Will Foster. “It wasn’t even, but our kids played through it and did some really great things. Some kids got some valuable minutes. I thought we did phenomenal despite the situation.”

Fouls plagued CCHS in the contest as starters Reese Dykes and Mason Wyatt spent much of the first half on the bench. Clarkrange took a 15-11 lead after one quarter and led 25-23 at halftime. Dykes had nine points in the first half.

CCHS stayed in the game in the third quarter as Clarkrange led 35-31 after three frames. However, Clarkrange withstood a final push from the Jets to win 49-40.

“Our theme this year is fight,” added Foster. “We’ve been in the game in the fourth quarter in every game we’ve played. The teams we’ve played have a combined one loss. The kids are playing hard.”

Wyatt finished with 15 points to lead CCHS. Freshman Kole Torres hit two three-pointers for Cumberland County as well.

The Jets will host Rhea County next Tuesday for their home opener.

“They’ve always got some athletes down there,” said Foster on Rhea County. “They graduated a lot from last year but so did we. I think it will be a really good game that we have a good chance to win.”

Cumberland County (40): Mason Wyatt 15, Reese Dykes 9, Kole Torres 6, Adam Floyd 5, Kyle Spieles 3, Andre Flores 2.
