Hoops Roundup: Fairview sweeps East Hickman; GCA splits with LEAD; BA girls cruise

The Fairview basketball teams picked up a pair of District 11-AA wins against visiting East Hickman on Friday night in Fairview.

The Lady Yellow Jackets battled past East Hickman 47-43, while the Fairview boys bolted to an 86-53 decision.

Fairview girls 47, East Hickman 43

The Lady Yellow Jackets overcame an early deficit to edge East Hickman in district play.

Kelsey Gossage led Fairview with 14 points and six rebounds and Kaycie Mullens added nine points and four assists. Anastasia Bierly netted all five of her points in the fourth quarter and added seven rebounds.

Fairview outscored East Hickman 15-6 in the second quarter to build a four-point edge at the half. The visitor’s pulled within 37-36 to start the fourth, but Fairview stayed in front.

Becky Capps scored 14 points and Kayla Rhea added 11 for East Hickman.

Fairview boys 86, East Hickman 53

After leading 21-15 at the end of the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets overwhelmed East Hickman with a 29-5 run before halftime as Fairview exploded offensively with six different Yellow Jackets scoring in the second quarter.

Mason McGowan paced the home team with 19 points and six rebounds, while DJ Estes added 18 points and five assists with three steals.

Fairview shot the ball 34-of-63 and knocked down nine 3-pointers.

Locke Hord (15), Bill Eads (12) and Trent Turner (10) also reached double figures in scoring, while Kam Harris-Lusk led the team in assists with nine.

Fairview improved to 15-2 overall and 4-1 in district play.

Shray Lewis scored 24 to lead East Hickman.

Grace Christian Academy girls 55, LEAD Academy 39

The Lady Lions bounced back from Thursday’s 55-43 loss to Hickman County by topping visiting LEAD Friday.

Anna Smith and Audrey Sanders both scored 21 points for the Lady Lions. Smith and Sanders netted 13 of the team’s final 15 as GCA extended a six-point lead entering the final frame. The duo also combined to hit seven 3-pointers.

GCA improved to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in district play with the win.

Alisha S. scored 19 points for LEAD.

Brentwood Academy girls 55, Pope John Paul II 28

The Lady Eagles bottled up PJPII early to cruise Friday. BA jumped out to a 16-3 lead after the first quarter and led 31-10 by halftime.

Maggie Brown netted 20 points to pace Brentwood Academy, eight other Lady Eagles reach the scorebook. Avery Kovick chipped in eight in the win.

LEAD Academy boys 71, Grace Christian Academy 63

Despite his second-straight 30-plus outing, LEAD overcame GCA standout Mason McKnatt and the Lions to claim a district win.

McKnatt, who scored 34 Thursday in a loss against Hickman County, dropped in 36 points with nine 3-pointers on Friday against LEAD.

Cole Scott added 17 for GCA, which dropped its first district game to move to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Five LEAD players reached double figures led by Gavin Smith’s 16. LEAD turned a six-point halftime lead into a double-figure advantage to start the fourth.

The GCA basketball teams return to action on Tuesday against RePublic at home near Leiper’s Fork.
