KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- There was actual wrestling on Senior Night at the Buck Van Huss Dome Thursday evening.

Coming off Tuesday’s thirteen forfeit fiasco and 78-6 handover victory from Science Hill, the District 1 champion Tribe grapplers pinned a 45-29 defeat against visiting Jefferson County.

In the process, the Indians also celebrated seniors Mason Bumgarner and Cade Salyers.

“I’m very happy that we got the win for our two seniors, Mason and Cade,” said Dobyns-Bennett coach Wesley Idlette. “For them to go out as District I champions plays a part of their leadership and dedication towards the wrestling program. I couldn’t be more proud of those two.”

Included in the Tribe decision were pins from Patrick Mitchell, Shane Lemons and Salyers along with a tough decision from Eli Whitley.

“Collectively, we are wrestling at our best right now,” added Idlette, whose team now looks forward to hosting the District 1 wrestling duals next Thursday with an eye towards a return trip to the state tournament in February.

“We still have a lot of wrestling to do,” continued Idlette. “Our wrestlers have individual and team goals that they had made prior to the season. We look forward to seeing them try to accomplish those goals.”
