It was certainly not the ending the No. 8 Cumberland County Lady Jets envisioned for their season, but nevertheless CCHS’ season came to a close Friday night at the hands of DeKalb County in the quarterfinals of the Region 4AA tournament at Cumberland County High School. The Lady Tigers, the No. 4 seed from District 8AA, won 67-66 in overtime.

Cumberland County senior guard Gracee Dishman posted a heroic performance in the defeat, scoring 32 points for the Lady Jets. Jessica Hedgecoth finished with 14 points along with Addy Wilson scoring 13.

Neither team would take more than a two-possession lead in Friday’s contest. DeKalb County led 17-16 after one quarter and 33-30 at halftime. Dishman had 16 first-half points for the Lady Jets.

Cumberland County made a run in the third period to take a 40-38 lead via an Alli Smith three-pointer. Dishman buried a three-pointer a minutes later to give CCHS a 43-38 lead.

The Lady Tigers stayed in it with hot shooting of their own to close the gap to two at the end of the period, 43-41.

Two Dishman free throws gave CCHS a 58-54 lead with 46.7 left in regulation, but DeKalb would hit a three-pointer to pull within one, 58-57. Two more Dishman free throws put CCHS ahead 60-57 until DeKalb buried a corner three-pointer with 6.8 seconds left to send the game to overtime, tied at 60.

After DeKalb led early in overtime, Cumberland County took a 66-65 lead with 50.4 remaining via a Dishman and-one. The Lady Tigers would score the game-winning basket via a loose-ball picked up by the rim with less than 30 seconds remaining to put them up one. CCHS got up a shot at the buzzer that rimmed out to give DeKalb the 67-66 win.

Cumberland County was without two starters and key defensive pieces, Kiara Wilson and Lauren Tabor, due to injury in the contest.

The Lady Jets finished the season 23-7 and District 7AA champions. Cumberland County’s senior class, including Gracee Dishman, Jessica Hedgecoth, Alli Smith, Addy Wilson and Kiara Wilson, had a career record of 101-21 along with four district championships.
