Cyclones outlast Grainger in Region 1-AA Boys Quarterfinals

The Elizabethton boys basketball team survived and advanced on Monday.

The Cyclones held on against a determined Grainger team to take a 48-41 victory in the Region 1-AA Boys Quarterfinals. With the win, Elizabethton advances to play Johnson County in the semifinals on Wednesday.


The Grizzlies took control in the early going.

After scoring the first five points of the game, Grainger pushed out to a 9-4 advantage in the first quarter. Elizabethton, however, answered strongly with shots from Eric Wilson, Jake Roberts and Carter Everett to pull within one point after eight minutes of play. The teams traded points early in the second quarter before Grainger pushed the lead back. The Cyclones, however, answered quickly to close the gap to 21-20 at the half.

Elizabethton, however, started to get going in the second half.

Wilson hit a pair of 3-pointers, while Nico Ashley had a big shot to keep EHS within striking distance. The Cyclones took advantage as tied the game at 33-33 going to the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, Elizabethton took control. 
Carter Everett hit a big jumper inside in the early going, and Ashley continued to provide EHS a spark. Bryson Rollins added three points in the quarter and Elizabethton held on in the closing minutes with strong defense to secure the win.

Wilson led the way with 16 points, while Ashley had 10 points. Everett finished with six points. Rollins and Jake Roberts had five points each.

Grainger was paced by Jeb Hurst who scored 15 points. Luke Jones added 12 points for the Grainger cause.
