A baseball season can’t start much better than a 5-0 victory, which is exactly how the Stone Memorial Panthers opened 2019 against the Oliver Springs Bobcats.

Jordan Pelfrey threw six scoreless innings with five strikeouts in the victory for SMHS.

“That’s what you want to do,” said SMHS coach Trent Stokes after the game. “Pitchers threw strikes, no errors on the day, and we took care of the first batter most of the time. That’s a good, solid performance.”

After Cameron McDonald crossed home plate in the first inning, the Panthers put two runs up in the bottom of the second via a Pelfrey single that scored McDonald and Jacob Brown to lead 3-0.

Stone Memorial added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth via a Pelfrey double to score McDonald and a Christian Carlton single to score Pelfrey, making it 5-0.

Tanner Hurd closed out the contest for SMHS, recording three strikeouts in the top of the seventh.

The Panther defense was spotless on the day with zero runs given up and no errors. The win is key for Stone Memorial to make strides from last season to this one.

“We had a bunch of freshmen last year,” added Stokes. “Those guys are all coming back with experience.

“We’re looking for the next guy to come out and throw strikes on the mound and play defense behind him and keep the process rolling,” added Stokes.”

Along with six scoreless innings pitched, Pelfrey recorded four RBIs on three hits.

McDonald, a track star at SMHS, recorded a hit, two stolen bases and three runs.

Stone Memorial (1-0) traveled to Oliver Springs on Tuesday, and will travel to Monterey on Thursday before closing out the week at home against Livingston Academy.
