BRISTOL — Morristown East trailed most of the way Friday night against Tennessee High in the Bristol FCA Baseball Tournament at Todd Houston Field before seeing a late-inning rally fall just short in a 9-8 loss to the Vikings.
East scored two runs in the top of the first to take its only lead of the game, as Tennessee High roared back with six runs in the home half of the first and saw its lead jump to 8-3 after three innings and 9-4 after four before the Hurricanes (5-8) scored an unanswered run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to close the deficit to a single run.
East got a base runner to second base in the seventh before Kyle Compton lined out to left field to end the game.
Compton and Landon Grizzell paced East with three hits and an RBI apiece, while Jacob Gossett, David Ellison and losing pitcher Joey Johnson all added two hits, with Gossett clubbing a double. Gossett notched a pair of RBIs, while Johnson, Austin Williams and Esten Devault each added and RBI in the contest.
Davis Hall had two hits with a double and three RBIs in the win, while Jacob Orr added a double and six other Vikings had a single in the victory. Jarrett Powell, Cole Presson and Peyton Fox each drove in a run in the win.
Johnson took the defeat after allowing eight earned runs on eight hits in three innings of work. Compton tossed the final three innings, giving up an unearned run on one hit with four strikeouts.
Orr was the winning pitcher after allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits in four innings. Presson tossed the final three innings, notching a save after giving up four earned runs on six hits.
East will be back in action Monday with a road game at Cocke County beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Big Red then heads to Morristown to face the Hurricanes at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Sherwood Park.
