Scott Branton has been promoted from offensive coordinator to head football coach at  Seymour, according to athletic director Gary Householder.

Branton, 36, replaces Scott Galyon, a former Tennessee Vols linebacker, who resigned after one season at Seymour, going 2-8.

"I think it's all about fit and with the relationships that had been established last year I felt like that was a really good fit for my first head coaching job," Branton said in a text message. "Last year we worked to establish some expectations within the program for the kids we have now and the kids we will have in the future and those won't really change that much since I got the job."

Branton coached at the University of Pikeville for four years, serving as the offensive coordinator his last year there. He also has coached at Jefferson County, Knoxville West, Knoxville Carter.

"The community was really behind him," Householder said. "We wanted a little bit of continuity within the program."

Branton was among six people interviewed for the job. Householer said 51 people applied for the position. He also said various players came into his office and asked if Branton could be hired as the head coach.

"He's a great guy," Householder said. "The kids are very excited."
