The Father Ryan boys soccer team used a strong second-half push to top the Martin Luther King Royals 3-1 on Senior Night on Wednesday.

“We thought we could do some things differently as far as attacking their back line,” Father Ryan coach Robin Dieterich said. “Once we did that, it created some gaps for us to get into.”

“We did a great job the first half of keeping possession, working the ball behind the back,” MLK coach Whit Campbell added. “Once we gave them space in the middle, they were able to take advantage of it. We got tired at the end, and they kept sending guys in to take advantage.”

The only goal in the first half came at a little over two minutes in by Father Ryan senior Drew Sloan for a 1-0 lead. The Fightin’ Irish scored two goals in the second half from seniors Will Turner and Matthew Jeyapaul to extend the lead to 3-0.

“Without their leadership, we would not be where we are right now,” Dieterich stated.

In the final minute, MLK tallied on a strike from senior Tate Messner to make the final score 3-1.

“Tate is the kind of player that if you get the ball at his feet, he has a 50-50 chance of making something special happen,” Campbell said. “We did a great job of staying focused so that when the ball fell to him late he (Messner) was able to make some moves.”

MLK will travel to Republic on Thursday night for a tough road match.

“We have got to rebound and take the positives,” Campbell stated. “We need to work on our game and keep possession of the ball, taking our chances when we can get them.”

Father Ryan’s next match comes on April 24 at Franklin.

“We have four more matches left in the season,” Dieterich said. “Three of them are regional matches, so we are looking for our team to continue scoring goals and being solid on defense.”
