The Unaka softball team took care of business in their first game of the District 1-A tournament.

The Lady Rangers captured a 12-2 victory over University High on Tuesday at Sullivan North.


With the win, Unaka advances to Wednesday’s winner’s bracket finale against North Greene with a spot in the championship game as well as the Region 1-A tournament.

First pitch is set at 5:30 p.m.

After University High took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, the Lady Rangers countered as Erika Potter and Lilie Kiser crossed home plate to tie the game going to the second. Unaka took their first lead of the night as Talia Potter hit a double to left field that brought Taylor Shanks across home plate in the bottom of the second. Potter scored off a Madison Pierce sacrifice fly that pushed the lead to 4-2 after two complete.

Unaka took full control of the game in the bottom of the fourth with five runs and then added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Sadie Shoun and Kiser had three hits apiece to lead Unaka, while T. Potter and E. Potter had two hits apiece. Kendall Bare and Pierce had one hit each.

Kailey Wilson picked up the win in the circle as he allowed two earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
