Commandos clinch spot in district championship

HENDERSONVILLE – Four unanswered goals help carry the Hendersonville Commandos soccer team past Hunters Lane for a 4-2 win in the District 10-AAA tournament semifinals.

Hendersonville’s first goal came midway through the first half after an assist from Carson Tighe led to a goal by Camron O’Reilly. The Commandos tacked on another goal just before the half, this time from Isaiah Ireton, assisted by Cade Good.

Just minutes into the second half, Tighe was on the scoring end of a goal, while Parker Tighe provided the assist. Kevin Dumitresu scored the fourth goal for Hendersonville 10 minutes later, with an assist by Sam Pomeroy.

“I think for the most part we learned from our mistakes during the season,” Hendersonville coach Russ Plummer said. “We corrected some things, and obviously we scored some goals finally. But again, at this point you can’t rest on your laurels. You’ve got to be ready for tomorrow. We’re playing tomorrow to beat the weather, and a lot is on the line, so we’ve got to show up and play.”

Both of Hunters Lane’s goals came late in the second half – one from Kevin Melina and the other by Miguel Medina.

“Hendersonville’s so talented, I’m not going to lie,” Hunters Lane coach Mike Fleck said. “I just think we got tired. They wore us out and took advantage of it. The goal that killed us was early in the second half when they scored their third. That’s the first team all year that’s scored more than two goals on us. They’re just a really good team.”

Hendersonville will now get a rematch against Station Camp for the district championship on Wednesday night. In the first meeting, the Bison upset the Commandos in the regular season with a 2-1 win.

“It’s a chance to play at home and a chance to win the district,” Plummer said. “Our guys have been through this before and they know what it takes.”
