BRENTWOOD – The Ravenwood Raptors girls lacrosse team held on in overtime to take a 13-12 win on a game-winning goal from senior Margaret Gleason against the Franklin Lady Rebels to clinch a spot in the lacrosse state championship game.

“At halftime, we talked about ebbs and flows of the game and that people go back and forth score-wise,” Ravenwood coach Bill Dryer said. “I told them to keep the course and relax out there.”

In the first half, the Raptors dominated with seven goals. Sophomore Andie McConnell scored three of the seven goals for Ravenwood. The other tallies came from senior Gleason, senior Hannah Lee Keller, and junior Julianna Iovine.

The Lady Rebels totaled three goals with two coming from senior Caden Pace and the other from sophomore Josie Ward.

Ravenwood continued to sizzle in the second half, adding five more goals. Freshman Emily Foley and Iovine scored two goals each, with Gleason tallying another.

Franklin rallied in the second half, scoring nine goals, including a buzzer-beater with one second remaining in the game from Ward. It was one of seven goals for Ward in the period. The other two goals came from sophomore Sarah Smith.

“(Ward) had a phenomenal game,” Franklin coach Carly Normandeau said. “Ward was able to be composed while being face guarded throughout the game, and she really fought to get the ball. The team worked so hard to gain possession. She took the initiative to take the ball to cage when she knew her team depended on her.”

In overtime, Gleason rifled a shot past the Franklin goalie with 1:10 remaining to seal the victory 13-12 for the Raptors.

“She is a senior that did not want this to be her last game,” Dryer said. “She decided to put the game on her shoulders and came up with the game winning goal.”

With this loss, the Lady Rebels season came to an end with an 8-8 overall record.

“For us to battle in the last second and force overtime with Ravenwood, who is No. 1 in the state, I am happy with that,” Normandeau said. “With us going 7-7 in the regular season and dealing with overtime losses and one-goal losses, to come back from that middle of the road season we had and lose by one in overtime shows that we have fight and did not give up.”
