Lincoln County High School’s Lady Falcon tennis doubles are headed to the Spring Fling. The duo of Lucy Higgins and Julia Marsh punched their ticket, sweeping the Region 4-AAA tournament in Murfreesboro.
The pair goes into the record books as the first ever from the Lady Falcon tennis program to advance to state competition. It’s Julia Marsh’s third trip to the big dance, having advanced two seasons with the Lady Falcon soccer team. They join Coach Jonathan Brown, the only other tennis player at LCHS to advance; he played singles in 2000 and 2001.
For their next action, the ladies take on Lainey Hill and Sydney Berry from Dobyns-Bennett. Match time is 9 a.m. Thursday morning.
“I’m proud of the girls and their efforts,” Brown said. “I knew we had a chance when we played in the team finals and lost 3-4 against Murfreesboro Magnet. After that match, I told some people that we have a shot if we play like we did in the team tournament.
“What a way for Julia to end her senior season and a great jump start for Lucy going into her junior and senior years of tennis,” he continued. “Making state will continue to raise the bar higher and higher for moving forward. It’s taken 11 seasons to get the tennis program to the state level, and hopefully this is only the beginning. It shows what hard work and playing throughout the year can do for you.”
On Monday of last week in the semifinals, Higgins and Marsh defeated Blackman’s Jillian Wiemer and Maddie Penney, 6-4, 6-3.
In the finals, their second match of the day, the pair won over Lauren Meyer and Lauren Marray from Siegel, 7-5, 7-5.
In the boys’ semifinals, Caden Teesateskie/Evan Pollard lost to Drew Elliot/Hussain Alzubaide from Siegel, 1-6, 1-6.
“The guys had a great season,” Brown added. “They lost to the eventual region champions. Both return next season to hopefully get us back to winning district and competing in region.”
