Germantown has hired Horn Lake offensive coordinator Tommy Ferrill as its next head football coach.

Ferrill, who spent the last five seasons at Horn Lake, replaces Chris Smith, who was hired at Haywood earlier this month. The Red Devils were 31-16 under Smith, including a 12-1 mark last season. Germantown fell to Whitehaven in the Class 6A quarterfinals.

"We at Germantown High School are thrilled to announce that Coach Tommy Ferrill has been named as our new head football coach," principal Barbara Harmon said in a statement. "We chose him because of his strong work ethic, excellent leadership skills, and his promotion of family values. He has been an extremely successful assistant football coach at Horn Lake High and he has come to us highly recommended."

Led by Butkus Award-winning Georgia signee Nakobe Dean, Horn Lake went 15-0 and captured its first football state title in 2018 with a 31-27 win over Oak Grove. The Eagles secured their berth in the title game with an 80-yard reverse pass with under a minute remaining in the 6A semifinals. Quarterback Raydarious Jones earned all-state honors and signed with LSU.
