Cloudland’s Birchfield back at the helm of girls basketball program

The Cloudland girls’ basketball program is back in familiar hands.

Cloudland has tabbed Matt Birchfield as the new head coach of the Lady ‘Landers program returning the program to one of the most successful coaches in its’ history. The school confirmed the move on Thursday.


Birchfield replaces Mike Lunsford who stepped down in March.

The Cloudland graduate previously served as head coach for 14 seasons. Birchfield led Cloudland to five state appearances – including back-to-back trips in 2012 and 2013. The Lady ‘Landers also made trips to Murfreesboro under the direction of Birchfield in 2002 and 2003.

In all, Birchfield led Cloudland to nine substate games.

Birchfield stepped down from the high school program in 2015, but he hasn’t been out of coaching.

This past season, Birchfield led the Jr. Lady ‘Landers basketball program to the first-ever middle school state championship game and also led the Cloudland softball program to the winningest season in program history as well as the first Regional tournament appearance.
