KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- Larry Shively’s final act as Dobyns-Bennett Athletic Director was offering the Lady Indians’ vacant head soccer coaching position to longtime assistant Tony Weaver.

Weaver was selected to succeed Blake Rutherford who stepped down last October.

“I’m so excited,” said Weaver, who quickly accepted the position. “It’s a great honor to coach at your alma mater and I’m thrilled about it.”

Shively was equally thrilled to be able to notify Weaver of his selection.

“I’m so happy for him (Weaver),” said Shively. “He has been a loyal assistant and does a great job in the classroom. It’s always good to give an assistant at shot at leading a program, especially one as respected as Coach Weaver.”

Weaver was on Dobyns-Bennett’s pre-TSSAA sanctioned state championship teams of 1984 and 1985 and play on Tennessee Wesleyan’s club team.

Weaver was an assistant for eight years under former coaches Rutherford and Chris Woods as well as last spring under new boys’ coach Tom LaGuardia and feels ready to lead the program.

“I’ve learned from all of them,” noted Weaver. “They were both big influences.”

Weaver, a social studies teacher at John Sevier Middle School, will also continue in his role as a boys’ assistant.
