Corbet Mims, a three-star defensive end from Kirby, has committed to Arkansas State, he announced via Twitter.

Mims, who holds multiple Power 5 offers, said that Ole Miss and Kentucky came close to getting him, but that his relationship with Arkansas State defensive line coach Brandon Joiner and overall fit with the team put the Red Wolves over the top.

"I wasn’t worried about being in the Power 5 or a big conference. I was more worried about the four or five years that I will be there," Mims said. "Am I satisfied with what I chose? Am I a good fit for this team? Am I going to be a part of their game plan?"

He said that the location of Arkansas State's campus, which is just over an hour away from Memphis in Jonesboro, Arkansas, played a role in his decision.

Mims committed early without taking any official visits.

"I really didn’t want to go anywhere far," Mims said. "I want to see my family come to every home game."

The 6-foot-4, 232-pound senior is the No. 17 prospect in Tennessee, according to the 247Sports Composite. He was named defensive line MVP of the 247Sports Southern Elite Combine last week.

Mims helped lead Kirby to an appearance in last year's Class 5A quarterfinals, where the Cougars lost to Henry County. The Kirby defense gave up 13.2 points per game during the regular season.
