Local volleyball teams are at work, preparing for the upcoming 2019 season.
And they will have a chance to prove themselves against local competition sooner rather than later.
Sequoyah will host a jamboree on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
All-day gate entry will cost $5, and concessions will be available from breakfast through dinner.
Teams expected to attend the jamboree include Tellico Plains, Polk County, McMinn Central, Meigs County, Kingston, Loudon and Lenoir City.
Lady Chiefs head coach Rebekah Monhollen’s team has been prepping for the tournament, which will test Sequoyah against many teams it will see during the season this fall.
“Excited to see the girls work so hard so far this summer,” Monhollen said.
Sequoyah is looking to build off a 2018 season that saw the Lady Chiefs notch a region tournament appearance for the first time in 12 years.
“We have a good core group of girls returning for our varsity team with strong additions from some transfer players,” Monhollen said. “Our JV team is young and eager to learn the game of volleyball and are working hard and improving each day.
“It will be exciting to see how they respond once they finally get the chance to play in a game and not just practice situations.”
Fellow Monroe County team and scheduled jamboree participant Tellico Plains is also hoping to improve in 2019.
The Lady Bears compete against district teams Polk County, Brainerd, Copper Basin, Meigs County, Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy and Tyner.
Sequoyah is working hard off the court this summer as well.
The Lady Chiefs held a team car wash and bake sale at Sloan’s supermarket in Vonore on Monday, July 29.
The event lasted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
